The Largest Observatory in Southeast Asia

Observatory is a place used for observing celestial events. Some examples of disciplines which
have used observatories are Astronomy, Oceanography, Meteorology/Climatology, Geophysical
and Volcanology.

In Indonesia, some of the observatories are mostly located in the western region, but recently the
country’s Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) is in the process of building a new one in
the eastern region. This new observatory is soon to be the largest observatory in Southeast Asia.
To be more specific, it is located in the Mount Timau area, Central Amfoang Sub-district,
Kupang District, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The new observatory is known as
Timau National Observatory.

The construction of the Timau National Observatory has begun in November 2018. It will be
equipped with an Optical Telescope that have 3.8 meters of diameter produced in Japan,
currently the latest and the largest Optical Telescope in Southeast Asia. The telescope will be
used for astrophysical research such as star observation, nebulae, and galaxy structures. Besides,
this observatory will be equipped with smaller telescopes as well, Sun Telescopes, and Radio
Telescopes are also planned to be there.

The Timau National Observatory is expected to be completed in 2019, and become a world-class
Astronomical Observation Facility.
