François Cusset’s French Theory records the fact that the shift
from Hegel to Nietzsche was a primary motivation for the
famous 1966 conference at Johns Hopkins University entitled
“The Language of Criticism and the Sciences of Man,” which
gave birth to poststructuralism (Barthes attended, Deleuze was
invited but could not make it and sent a letter that was read
publicly by the organizers).[15]
