Education in Chile

During last month, we’ve been participants or spectators of many students

demonstrations’ that pose an improvement to educational reform through plans to improve
the quality of education.
Everybody remember the "Revolucion Pinguina in 2006" year where presented the
same problems that we face today and weren't resolved efficiently. This is why that this year
were resumed the protests for get equity in education, equality of opportunities regardless the
money, lower university tariffs and end with the profit in the education, because when you
start a university career you end paying a mortgage credit but in education, that must to be a
right and not a privilege.
In Chile exists a free trade in education and somebody that has money can open a
educational enterprise, therefore the education quality doesn't matter and just matters make
money. Also there isn't an institution that regulates the equality in the new establishments that
they are appearing.
Compared with Latin-American countries, Chile just pays the 15% of all that needs in higher
education.
The state contribution is the lowest in the world because the GDP (gross domestic
product) has decreased since 1974 until 0.3% that corresponds at present, therefore Chile
should consider an increase of GDP for the funding of education. Chile invests in education 0.3%
GDP and 3.73% in Armed Forces, however this makes no sense because now there aren't war
conflicts with other countries that gives sense to this money, therefore the armed forces are
the best the best option for give more money to education.
Other good alternative by Marcel Claude (economist of Universidad de Chile) is that
with the resources that Chile has, it has the luxury of giving 25 Billion dollars annually to the
copper enterprises for they earn money and can not give 20 thousand dollars to a student, that
is the cost of a career of 5 years. For example, the Luksic Family receives 8 billion dollars
annually by copper and with this money five hundred thousand students could get education in
the university paying nothing.
