Estos se utilizan en combinación con otros verbos para expresar diferentes grados de capacidad,
posibilidad, permiso, necesidad, obligación, prohibición, seguridad, etc., referidos al verbo
principal.

CAN/COULD

CAN. Se trata de un término que indica habilidad, es decir la capacidad de realizar algo o también
posibilidad, o sea que algo es posible que se concrete, por ejemplo:

Affirmative

You can win this time.

Ana can do that experiment by herself.

Negative

You can´t win this time.

Interrogative

Can you win this time?

Para el pasado usamos COULD.

You could win

My aunt could come in her car.

MAY/ MIGHT

May/Might pueden traducirse como “puede” cuando nos referimos a una probabilidad y no a la
capacidad de hacer algo, ya que en tal caso utilizaríamos el verbo modal CAN.

He may accept a new deal.


Laura might /may come today.

Lucía may finish her homework.

My friends may visit to me at night.

May I go to the cinema?

Differences:

I can write so fast. Yo puedo escribir muy rápido.

I may write a letter from my boss. Yo puedo escribir una carta a mi jefe.

Deber como obligación:

You must eat your vegetables.

They must save their money.

Should

Deber como sugerencia o consejo.

You should finish your activities.

We should do exercise for our health.

Would

Terminación -ría en español.

Carolina travels to Sweden.

Carolina may not travel to Sweden.

Carolina must not travel to Sweden.

I can read a book.

I could read a book.

I can borrow a pencil.

I would sing and enjoy.

You should clean the house.

Pedro should think in his future.
