Launch of internal specialized training program for utilizing AI & machine learning
～ 'Data Science Hill Climb' supervised by project associate
associate professor Yutaka Matsuo

Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc. (President & Group CEO: Tsuyoshi Nagano) launched internal
training program called 'Data Science Hill Climb' aiming to train actuaries, financial engineers
and SEs to acquire data science capabilities, required for the group to proceed with digital
transformation.
This program is designed under supervision by project associate professor Yutaka Matsuo at
the University of Tokyo and is a systematic scheme for discovering, nurturing, and evaluating
data scientists suitable for our company.

１．Background
In "safety and security”, we are working to utilize state-of-the-art digital technologies with a
strong sense of purpose to continue to be the existence that supports customers and society
when they need.
Moreover, we would like to thoroughly pursue "fusion of human and digital technology", which
means to let our staffs concentrate on the tasks that only human can do by enhancing efficiency
through a use of digital technologies.
Under such policies, we are developing services to reduce accidents by using AI & machine
learning as well as improving the efficiency of insurance underwriting.
One of the necessary resources we need to implement above policies is competent data
scientists with insurance domain knowledge. Currently, insurance industry is short of such data
scientists and, therefore, we decided to begin ‘Data Science Hill Climb’
Climb’, which accelerates the
training of internal talents. At the same time, active recruitment of data scientist will run with
the program.

２．Overview of the program
This program makes full use of the accumulated educational know-how, under the supervision
of project associate professor Yutaka Matsuo, who is known as a leading expert in artificial
intelligence research in Japan.
The program is made up of 4 components with 200 hours curriculum; a) mathematics, which
cover the theoretical background of AI and machine learning, b) theory and application of
machine learning, c) case study, and d) theory and application of deep learning. The goal for the
participants is to systematically learn data science from the basics.
The curriculum is administered in cooperation with three companies, NABLAS inc., ALBERT
Inc., and Skill Up AI Co., Ltd., which have experience in data science human resources education.

３．Operation schedule
This program will complete the trial in FY2018 and will formally start in FY2019. From FY2020,
we intend to enhance the program to add specialized training component such as image
recognition and NLP.

４．Next deployment
We will strategically train data scientists as core human resources to support insurance
business and make use of those talents not only for insurance underwriting but also for the
prevention and reduction of accidents. We will challenge to create new businesses from new
data beyond the existing data utilization.
In the future, we are considering opening "Data Science Hill Climb" to other companies and
students to support development and use of AI.
