The lord of the day (Sun) is the universal Soul.

To understand any planet or any part of astrology, the most important point of reference
is usually the first description of that particular entity. The first description given by
Paräçara about the Sun is: The Sun is the universal soul.
The seers were very careful with their choice of words and we may infer from this
description that to understand the Sun we need to understand the ätma or soul. We
must also understand how the suns precedence over this role is different from that of the
chara ätmakäraka or temporary significator of the soul.
Studying the Puräëas we find that two souls are often described; these being the
universal soul or ‘paramätmä’, and the individual soul or ‘jivätmä’. These two are
symbolically described in the Srimad Bhagavatam1 as two birds seated on the same
branch:

sup[aRvetaE sÎzaE srvayaE yÎCDyEtaE k«tnIfaE c v&]e,

@kStyae> Svadit ipPplanmNyae inrÚae=ip blen ÉUyan!.11,11,6

By chance these birds are friends and are similar in nature. They have made a nest and one bird is
eating from the tree, but the other is not, yet is by strength superior. 11.11.6
AaTmanmNy< c s ved ivÖanipPpladae n tu ipPplad>,

yae=iv*ya yuKs tu inTybÏae iv*amyae y> s tu inTymu´>.11,11,7

The bird who doesn't eat, is omniscient and understands the condition of himself and that of the
other bird who is eating. However, the other bird does not understand neither his own
position or that of the first bird and is ever conditioned and in ignorance, whereas the other is
forever liberated. 11.11.7
The bird that doesn’t eat is said to be the paramätmä or super soul, whilst the eater is the
jévätmä or conditioned soul. This interplay between the paramätmä and jivätmä
elucidates this division of the Sun vs. the chara ätmakäraka. One is the giver and is
everlasting, whilst the other is the taker. The Sun is the giver and shows the
opportunities given to us by the world.
Now we can proceed to study the other aspects of the Sun.

raviëä vedäntajïo gétajïaçca|| 1-2-113

‘The Sun bestows knowledge of vedanta and géta.’

Whilst summarizing the effects of the various planets, Jaimini states that the Sun gives
knowledge of vedänta and géta. Some have translated the word ‘géta’ to mean Bhagavat
Géta, but the word géta has a much broader meaning and existed long before the géta
was sung by Sanjaya to Dhåtarañöra. Géta means singing, or that which is sung. It more
than often refers to poems or sacred doctrines which are written to be sung.
However, the translation does not exclude the Bhagavat Géta as this is a part of Vedänta.
Vedänta consists of two words: veda and anta, which literally means ‘the boundary or
end-limit of the Vedas/sacred knowledge’. It refers to vijïäna or ‘higher–spiritual
knowledge’, which is taught by the spiritual master to the disciple. In Jyotish vijïänämsa
is seen from the ninth house from kärakäàça, and in the tradition the deity associated
with this is called the Dharma Devatä.
The meaning and use of these points will be dealt with in this article.

1 The Sun and Géta

There are many géta such as Ägastya géta, Guru géta, etc. point is that the Sun gives
knowledge of how one should sing. However, this knowledge doesn’t imply being a
singer otherwise Paräçara and Jaimini would have used the word: gäyaka, which
instead is a trait attributed to the Moon. Instead it indicates the ability to keep a tune or a
rhythm, as the songs or géta are recorded with a certain metre or Chhanda, and so also
the Sun can make one a musician and give understanding of Chhanda.
So, the Sun gives knowledge of rhythm or Chhanda and this is emphasized being that
the Sun god is described to be driven by seven horses symbolizing the seven primal
types of Chhanda used in the mantras. These are: gäyatri2, båhati3, uñëiù4, jagati5,
triñöubh6 anuñöubh7, and païkti8.
Each Chhanda has a certain purpose as their rhythm or beat has the power to create
something. This creation began with the udgéta or praëava known as AUM, the first

word of this creation. In other words, the Sun has the power to create as it rules the
sound or rhythm which causes creation!
In Sanskrit the vowels are known as ‘svara’ which means ‘sound’. It also means ‘breathe’
and thus acts as a symbol of life. Hence, it’s only appropriate that Harihara9 has
attributed the sixteen vowels or svara to the Sun. Among these sixteen, it is said that
four are neuters10 leaving twelve which have the power of causing creation. These
twelve are said to cause the creation of the twelve sun signs which are known as the
dvädasa äditya.
Here creation can manifest in two ways:
i) God creating resources for the native.
ii) The native creating another being and thereby becoming a parent.

1.1 Creation
It is said that Prajäpati is forever trying to create the perfect being in God’s own image,
and it is through the living beings that he is attempting to make this flawless copy.
However, being that the creation is based on sound, the ability of the living beings to
hear this sound will decide whether the new creation can occur or not. The ear is seen
from the third house and this is also known as the house of dikñä or spiritual initiation
spoken by the Guru into the right ear. Similarly the Gurus or forefathers capability to
initiate the native is seen in the ninth house. From the äruòhas of these two houses (viz.
third and ninth) we will understand the native’s ability to conceive.
Here the äruòhas of the third (A3) and ninth (A9) from Lagna and Sun (As3 and As9)
are to be calculated to understand conception. The äruòhas from lagna will show the
physical ability/errors, whilst those from the Sun will indicate the strength of the life
force/ätma which enters the native.
• Should a weak Venus11 be joined the eighth from these äruòhas the seed (vérya
dhätu) is not strong and the person wastes their ability to conceive.
• The Sun placed in the second, twelfth, sixth or eighth from these äruòhas denies
conception ability.
In addition we add:
• Should the Upapada and its trines be associated with Mercury, Saturn and Venus
(the enemies of Jupiter) the natives spouse may have trouble conceiving.

Venus joined Mercury/Virgo or malefics causes the virya to be weak.

The remedy for the native is to fast on days of the Upapada (both partners can do so),
seek medical attention where needed and if possible they should recite the Gayatri with
Jala Beeja, or recite the Santana Gopala Mantra of Sri Krishna:

Chart 1: Lady

In the given chart of a lady, the äruòha of the third and ninth houses are placed in
Capricorn and Sagittarius respectively. Sun is placed in Libra, and there is no bad
placement from these äruòha. Venus is afflicted by Mercury and Mars in Scorpio, but is
not placed in the eighth from the A3 and A9.
The äruòha of the third and ninth houses from the Sun, are placed in Pisces and Aries
respectively. From Pisces the Sun is placed in the eighth from it, as is an Amavasya
moon. This hinders conception. The eighth from Aries has the weakly placed Venus and
confirms that the native is not able to bring a soul into this world.
The fifth house has Mars and is aspected by Saturn and indicates that the native may
adopt children instead. The native has adopted two children.

Chart 2: Lady 2

This lady has a debilitated Venus whilst Sun is debilitated in Libra. The äruòha of the
third and ninth houses are both in Capricorn which is a good placement. However, the
äruòha of the third from Sun (As3) is placed in Lagna in Pisces, and this puts the Sun in
the eighth from it denying conception. Further the äruòha of the ninth from Sun is
placed in Aquarius putting the debilitated Venus in the eighth from it, again giving
problems with conception.
The lady has been trying to have children with her partner, but unfortunately it was
found that though she had become pregnant, the fetus had died in her womb and had
become blocked in the fallopian tube. This is an example of the child’s soul leaving the
body prematurely.
Through more in depth analysis we see that the eighth lord Venus is under a curse and
its parivartana with Mercury in Libra causes the problem to rise in the reproductive
organs (Libra).

Chart 3: Gentleman

In this chart, the Sun is well placed from all four äruòha. However, the Upapada is
placed in Aquarius with Mercury joined it showing that the partner may have trouble in
conceiving.
We may also note that Saturn is placed in the fifth house as Ätmakäraka (loss of
children) and its lord is involved in a destructive yoga (Sun-Venus).
The native is yet to have children and this is causing tension in the relationship.

Chart 4: Lady 3

In the chart of this lady the äruòha of third and ninth from lagna and Sun are without
affliction and Venus is not weak. However, the upapada falls in Aquarius and the ninth
there from is a Venusian sign containing Mercury. Venus itself is receiving the aspect of
Saturn confirming complete lack of children from marriage due to spouse.
The grahaëa yoga on the upapada and the lord – Rähu being involved in the curse also
bodes badly for the marriage and may function as a curse in the horoscope.
The lady was tricked into marrying a eunuch. Having discovered this she decided to live
with the person and keep the matter a secret. The placement of upapada in the eleventh
from äruòha lagna gives a clue to the motivation for keeping the marriage alive. Later
when her siblings discovered this (mars placed in seventh from upapada), the marriage
was ended.

1.2 Raja yoga

The Sun God was born in Maghä nakñatra whose name refers to wealth and power.
Maghä is said to be the palace of the zodiac, and its only appropriate that this nakñatra
falls in the mülatrikoëa sign of the Sun namely Leo. Due to this association of the Sun, it
is associated with raja yoga in the horoscope.
The tradition teaches that the räçi dispositor of the Sun shows the extent of raja yoga the
native will experience in their life. This is based on the principle that the Sun initiates
raja yogas whilst the moon sustains them. Here the Sungod takes eight forms forming a
Sürya Chakra, through which he bestows raja yoga on the native.

Here the signs placement of the planet is

of prime importance, as this will indicate
the real enjoyment experience by the
native. The house will tell us where and
how the native will experience this.
In this context Chandra Käla Nädi gives u
an important clue:

dzaNtre mhÑaGy< sUya¡z¢hdayke, 2995

daçäntare mahadbhägyaà süryäàçagrahadäyake| 2995

The antara daçä of Suns navämça dispositor

bestows the greatest fortune.
Based on this statement, we can infer:
Principle: The strength of the Suns navämça dispositor should be analyzed in the
chart for an analysis of the native’s fortune.
Chart 5: Sri Rama

Sri Rama was the son of king Daçaratha of Ayodhya, and as a result enjoyed enormous
luxury and fortune throughout his childhood and upon his kingship. In his chart the
Sun is placed in Aries whose lord is Mars.
Mars is exalted and promises the highest raja yoga; however, its placement in maraëa
käraka sthäna promises that this raja yoga can come after great struggle. Mars is also
involved in a curse of Brahmin which needs to be interpreted as part of the yoga for
great kingship. Sri Rama was exiled to the jungle and had to see the kidnapping of his

wife. He underwent a great struggle to rescue her. After fourteen years of exile and
suffering the curse, he returned to his kingdom and attained his seat as the ruler of
Ayodhya.
Through some estimations of the birth time given in the çästra, it may be inferred that
the Sun also occupies Aries navämça, due to which Mars also decides the extent of
fortune that Sri Rama would enjoy.
Chart 6: Gates, Bill

In the chart of well known and world famous multi-billionaire Bill Gates, the Sun is
debilitated in the chart. However, its dispositor is in its own sign promising the
experience of raja yoga.
To analyze the extent of wealth that he may be surrounded by, we need to analyze the
navämça dispositor of the Sun. The Sun is placed in Saturn’s navämça and Saturn is
placed in exaltation in the chart. This is a clear indication of the wealth and fortune that
Mr. Gates has amassed in his life. The conjunction with a debilitated Sun indicates that
the government or companies indicated by the Sun will be the main obstructions for this
raja yoga. Mr. Gates has mainly seen setbacks from the United States government and
the company Sun Microsystems.

Chart 7: Andrew Carnegie

In the given chart of the Steel-tycoon Andrew Carnegie, the Sun is placed in Scorpios
räçi and its dispositor is Mars itself placed in own sign in Scorpio, showing that he will
experience a good amount of raja yoga in this life.
The navämça dispositor of the Sun is Venus, and whilst Venus is not strong by his sign
placement, he is forming very strong dhana yoga by its conjunction with Mars and the
aspects of the Moon. These two Mars-Moon and Venus-Moon yogas are eulogized by
Mahäåñi Jaimini to be the givers of great wealth and with the involvement of Ketu the
yoga formed is the Vaitanika yoga, giving the perks of great luxury and wealth.
Andrew Carnegie was one of the first millionaires of his time, and to this date his empire
continues and his donations to society are still remembered.

Chart 8: Donald John Trump

This is the chart of real-estate billionaire Donald Trump. In the given chart, the
dispositor of the Sun is Venus in Cancer. This alone doesn’t give much räjayoga, but
being vargottama it indicates that he will be famous and also live a glamorous life
through his wealth. Venus being the dispositor is also likely to bring him into television.
The navämça dispositor of the Sun is Mercury placed in own sign in räçi granting great
resources wealth-wise. This is further the second lord in the eleventh house from the
Lagna and can therefore give great dhanayoga. Jupiter is the fifth lord and is in mutual
räçi dristi with Mercury and completes the dhanayoga.
The dasämça will tell us more about his personal success.

om namo bhaskaräya sarvalokaprakäçakäya
mama hådi prakäçaà kurukuru svähä||

With the time of 9:51 AM the seventh house would be occupied by Moon and Ketu,
which doesn’t justify his success in his real-estate business. Instead Saturn in the seventh
joined an exalted Venus is more telling of his work in reconstruction (Saturn) of
property, and his entry into entertainment/television (Venus). Saturn is also the fifth
lord from Lagna and will reveal the extent of his power and authority. Its conjunction
with the exalted Venus, who happens to be the räçi dispositor of the Sun shows that his
authority is highly dependant on i) his wealth and ii) his marriage/relationships
(Venus).
His divorce from his wife in 1990-1991 not only brought a large settlement in favor of his
wife, but also put him in a situation where he couldn’t pay off his loans. This continued
to bleed his finances until 1994.
Moon mahadasa was running and is placed in the eighth house of loans. Yet, it is joined
Ketu and aspected by Rähu and Mars showing great problems in clearing the same, and
suffering can arise from this. This is likely to hurt him in the antaradasas placed in
Dusthäna or Märaka houses from the Moon. The first among these is that of Mars,
during which his company had taken on the venture of restoring the Wollman Rink, in
Central Park New York. A project which though estimated at 2 ½ years, stretched all the
way through Saturns antardaçä in 1986. Surely the parivartana between Mars and
Mercury along the first and third houses gave him some unwanted publicity (lagna) due
to the agreements (third house) that he couldn’t keep.
The antardaçä of Venus began from October 1989. Trump made some high risk
investments into building the Taj Mahal Casino (Venus exalted in seventh) and couldn’t
pay of the past loans that he had acquired. He filed for business bankruptcy and was at
the verge of personal bankruptcy. This was also happening during divorce proceedings
and accusations of having an affair. He emerged from this with the advent of Mars

mahadasa who is the eighth lord in Lagna and will pay off all debts. About midway into
the same daçä he had paid off a $ 900 million dollar personal debt and also brought his
real-estate investments out of the same, and again could lead the way towards being one
of the richest men in America.

2 Sun and Vedänta

The Sun is also responsible for bestowing dharma on the native. Dharma is seen from
the ninth house as per standard literature, and the more auspicious the dharma
performed in the last life, the more auspicious the bhägya in this life will be. Here
bhägya is understood as fortune or luck. Hence, it is only apt that Paräçara calls the fifth
and ninth houses the houses of Lakshmi12.
Being that the Sun is the giver of dharma in this case, we must analyze the house of
dharma from the Suns point of view to understand which dharma is bestowed upon us
in this life.
However, we should not analyze the ninth house from the Sun. Being that the Sun is
giving us dharma, and not dharma being given to the Sun, we must analyze the fifth
house from the Sun. The fifth house from the Sun will help us understand the dharma
given to us by the Sun god. Similarly we should analyze the other houses from the Sun,
i.e. fourth house for karma (normally tenth) and third house for läbha (normally
eleventh).
Principle: The fifth house from the Sun will reveal how we can fulfill our dharma.
Analyzing the yogas formed by planets placed in the fifth house, or if none the lord
of the fifth, we can see the opportunity given to the native to fulfill their dharma.

Here the suns dispositor is placed in the twelfth house showing the results of raja yoga
coming in a foreign country or one of a foreign language. The suns navämça dispositor
is Saturn and is placed in own sign, as a result it gave raja yoga early in life during
Saturn mahadaçä, but its retrogression made the same very temporary and gave high
rise and steep fall.
The fifth house from the Sun is Scorpio and is lorded by Mars and Ketu. Ketu is in the
tenth house and in the sign of Jupiter indicating astrology as the path indicated by the
Sun God. This is also Parampara yoga, giving knowledge from a lineage or tradition.
Mars is the other lord in the seventh house. Unfortunately this placement of Mars can be
inauspicious and cause severe battles, whilst its involvement in the Guru-Mangala yoga
promotes the karma of the seers. The native is an astrologer from Jagannath Puri –
Orissa and promotes the more spiritual aspects of astrology.
Notably the fourth lord from the Sun is Venus who is eighth lord and joined the sixth
lord in the fifth house forming the yoga for teaching a vedanga to foreigners. This will
be the karma of the native in this birth.
Chart 10: Larsen, Visti

In this case the Sun is placed in Scorpio räçi and its involved in a parivartana yoga. Its
räçi and navämça dispositors are again Mars and Sun respectively and are involved in
the parivartana yoga. The placement in friendly signs is good for the experience of
fortune.
The fifth lord from the Sun is Jupiter, who is placed in a Guru-Çiçya yoga sending the
native into the line of teaching and learning in a real tradition. Jupiter is in parivartana

yoga with Venus, who happens to be seventh lord causing Shiva yoga (seventh lord and
fifth lord) enabling the person to gain enormous knowledge through this pursuit.
Notably Mercury is also eighth lord joining the fifth lord Jupiter, again promoting the
teaching of vedanga to foreigners.
Chart 11: Bush, George Sr.

In the given chart of Ex-president George Bush Sr. the Sun is placed in Taurus. The räçi
and navämça dispositors are Venus and Mercury respectively. Whilst Venus is strong
due to its placement in same navämça, mercury is not seemingly strong. Mercury is also
the giver of dharma in the chart being the fifth lord from the Sun.
However, upon closer analysis we see that Mercury is Chara putra käraka and joined the
Chara ätmakäraka Sun causing a maharaja yoga giving power of the highest order.
Amätyakäraka being Rähu promotes a direction into politics, and its dispositor being
joined tenth lord Mercury confirms the presidency.

Chart 12: Bush Jr., George W

In the case of the current president George W. Bush Jr. the Suns räçi and navämça
dispositors are Mercury and Mars respectively. Mercury is placed in the lagna not
particularly strong in the räçi or navämça, but it is joined the Simhäsana yoga of Saturn
in cancer, and the maharaja yoga of ätmakäraka and pitåkäraka.
Mars is forming Simhäsana yoga again by being tenth lord in the second house, hence
the bhägya of the Sun God arises through power.
The fifth lord from the Sun is Venus and is the ätmakäraka involved in the raja yoga for
power. The dharma bestowed upon Mr. Bush was to take on the reigns of the nation.
The conjunction between ätmakäraka and däräkäraka promotes wealth through the
power he attains.
Notably the fourth lord from Sun is also involved in the yoga, showing the karma
promoted by the Sun God.
