Illustration 1
Diagram of the basic fuel system for C6.4 (typical example)
(4) ECM
The low-pressure fuel circuit supplies filtered fuel to the fuel injection pump at a
constant rate. The low-pressure fuel circuit cools the ECM. The low-pressure fuel
circuit provides fuel at 500 kPa (72.5 psi).
g01620068
Illustration 4
High-pressure fuel system (typical example)
The fuel injection pump (5) feeds fuel to the high-pressure fuel manifold (21) . The fuel
is at a pressure of 70 MPa to 130 MPa (10153 psi to 18855 psi). A pressure sensor (8) in
the high-pressure fuel manifold (21) monitors the fuel pressure in the high-pressure fuel
manifold (21) . The ECM controls a solenoid (23) in the fuel injection pump (5) in order
to maintain the actual pressure in the high-pressure fuel manifold (21) at the desired
level. The high-pressure fuel is continuously available at each injector. The ECM
determines the correct time for activation of the correct electronic unit injector (1)
which allows fuel to be injected into the cylinder. The leakoff fuel from each injector
passes into a drilling which runs along the inside of the cylinder head. A line is
connected to the rear of the cylinder head in order to return the leakoff fuel to the
pressure side of the fuel transfer pump.
The following list contains examples of both service and repairs when you must
prime the system:
g01812193
Illustration 5
Hand fuel priming pump
The pump has a plunger (25) which is manually operated in order to prime the fuel
system. Air is removed from the fuel system to the fuel return line to the tank. The fuel
transfer pump is located in the fuel injection pump.
Note: Machines that are equipped with optional fuel filtering equipment have the hand
fuel priming pump located on the primary fuel filter base.
g01812195
Illustration 6
The secondary fuel filter (15) is located after the priming pump. The filter is always
before the fuel injection pump.
Note: Certain machines are equipped with additional secondary fuel filters.
The fuel injection pump generates high pressure for the fuel system.
The fuel output of the fuel injection pump is controlled by the ECM in response to
changes in fuel pressure.
g01343648
Illustration 8
The fuel transfer pump provides a relatively low fuel pressure to the fuel injection
pump. The fuel transfer pump has a regulating valve in order to control the low
pressure. The fuel transfer pump circulates fuel through the primary fuel filter and the
secondary fuel filter. The fuel transfer pump has a fuel bypass valve in order to allow
the low-pressure fuel system to be primed.
Shutoff
The engine shuts off by interrupting the fuel supply. The ECM specifies the amount of
fuel. The quantity of the fuel that is required by the ECM is set to zero.
Control
g01216984
Illustration 9
Electronic control for the fuel system (typical example)
The ECM determines the quantity, timing, and pressure of the fuel in order to be
injected into the fuel injector.
The ECM uses input from the sensors on the engine. These sensors include the
speed/timing sensors and the pressure sensors.
The ECM controls the fuel pressure by increasing or decreasing the flow of fuel from
the fuel injection pump. The ECM controls the timing and the flow of fuel by actuating
the injector solenoid.
The amount of fuel is proportional to the duration of the signal to the injector solenoid.
Fuel Injectors
g01343650
Illustration 10
When the ECM sends a signal to the injector solenoid, a valve inside the injector opens.
The valve allows the high-pressure fuel from the fuel manifold to enter the injector. The
pressure of the fuel pushes the needle valve and a spring. When the force of the fuel
pressure is greater than the force of the spring, the needle valve will lift.
The timing and duration of injection is controlled by a solenoid valve in the injector.
The valve has two positions. In the closed position, the valve closes the inlet to the
injector. In this position, fuel above the injector needle is allowed to vent through the
leakoff port.
In the open position, the valve opens the inlet to the injector. Simultaneously, the valve
closes the leakoff port in order to allow high-pressure fuel to flow to the needle. When
the solenoid valve is closed, some fuel escapes past the valve in order to vent through
the leakoff port. A certain volume of fuel always flows from the leakoff port. If the
volume of fuel increases beyond a critical level, the fuel injection pump will not be able
to maintain pressure in the fuel manifold. The faulty electronic unit injector must be
identified and replaced.
When the signal to the injector ends, the valve closes. The fuel in the injector changes to
a low pressure. When the pressure drops, the needle valve will close and the injection
cycle stops. When the needle valve opens, fuel under high pressure will flow through
nozzle orifices into the cylinder. The fuel is injected into the cylinder through the
orifices in the nozzle as a fine spray.
The needle valve has a close fit with the inside of the nozzle. The close fit makes a
positive seal for the valve.
Fuel Manifold
g01620073
Illustration 11
The fuel pressure sensor (8) measures the fuel pressure in the fuel manifold (21) .
The fuel manifold (21) stores high-pressure fuel from the fuel injection pump. The high-
pressure fuel will flow to the injectors.
The relief valve (24) will prevent the fuel pressure from getting too high.

NOTICE
Ensure that all adjustments and repairs that are carried out to the fuel
system are performed by authorized personnel that have the correct
training.
Before beginning ANY work on the fuel system, refer to Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information and High
Pressure Fuel Lines" for safety information.
1. Check the fuel level in the fuel tank. Ensure that the vent in the fuel cap is not
filled with dirt.
2. Check all fuel lines for fuel leakage. The fuel lines must be free from restrictions
and faulty bends. Verify that the fuel return line is not collapsed.
4. Cut the old filter open with a suitable filter cutter. Inspect the filter for excess
contamination. Determine the source of the contamination. Make the necessary
repairs.
Note: In cold environments, certain components in diesel fuel can cause fuel
filters to clog prematurely. See your dealer or fuel supplier for appropriate
actions to correct this condition.
5. Operate the hand priming pump (if equipped). If excessive resistance is felt,
check that there is fuel in the fuel return line to the tank.

sellado. No debe estar retorcido.

g00446498
Ilustración 13
El sello tórico retorcido puede estar desalineado. Los sellos desalineados producen una
presión desigual en la cara del sello. Los sellos desalineados también pueden causar
posibles astilladuras, rayas y fugas.

aceite consistentes a intervalos uniformes.

Esta Publicación Especial no aborda los intervalos de drenaje del aceite recomendados;
(5.000 ppm).

g01041110
Illustration 10
Schematic for a 4C-3582 Load Sensing Valve
The valve is used to adjust the high pressure cutout and margin pressures on
load sensing pumps.
The valve is a high pressure manifold that has flow control, a relief valve, gauge
ports and flow ports. The flow control simulates the control valve on the vehicle.
The relief valve simulates a load condition of the implement circuit.
The flow capacity is 227 L/min (60 US gpm). The adjustable pressure range is
approximately 344 to 41369 kPa (50 to 6000 psi).
Use the 1U-5796 Differential Pressure Gauge in conjunction with the 4C-3522
Load Sensing Valve in order to test margin pressure.
Caterpillar Hydraulic Test Centers have a load sensing system that is
incorporated in the hydraulics. The test centers do not require a 4C-3582 valve .
