RAISING READERS ACADEMY

Raising Readers Academy is a two-tiered, twelve-session program designed to create systemic change by
mentoring and empowering parents to see themselves as their child’s first reading teacher by engaging in
literary activities which can be duplicated and expanded upon at home.
The families enjoy a meal while parents meet with an instructor to learn strategies and ideas for specific
literacy components covered in the Michigan’s reading curriculum. At the same time, children are interacting
and enjoying an activity supporting the same concept being discussed by their parents.
Afterwards families come together to have a story read out loud, modeling these new strategies, and a good
book is enjoyed by all. Following the modeling, parents get a chance to read with their own children to
implement some of these new methods to improve reading skills. Parents are encouraged, children gain
confidence and skills, and the entire family is inspired to see themselves as “readers.”
At the end of each session, parents are asked for feedback while each child is allowed to choose a book of
choice to take home and build a personal library!
This program provides a hands-on approach to successful reading for Saginaw families. For more information,
