1 SCOPE torque collars, equipment, c onnections

The purpose of this document is to provide a standard set of collar torque charts
for Field personnel to use when making-up Schlumberger collars and equipment.
The torque values in the following charts are to be used to make-up connections
on Schlumberger drill collars.

Quality Note
The charts are not to be used to design a particular connection, since the BSR
values of certain combinations may exceed the Engineering recommended
values.

2 REQUIREMENTS torque collars, equipment, c onnections

To use these charts you must determine the following:

• thread type
• the outside diameter (O.D.) of the female thread connection (BOX)
• the through inside diameter (I.D.) of the male thread connection (PIN), this
is not the bore of the lead-in taper.

Refer to the diagrams on each set of connection charts for measurement location.
The calculations also assume proper use of lubrication. Spray coat all threads
with Moly duolube, allow to dry and then apply an even layer of CopperKote to all
threads as recommended by Engineering for proper collar make-up.

3 QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS torque collars, equipment, c onnections

In order to provide quality service to the torques given in this document, the
collars and equipment must be in good working condition. Collar connection
inspections are essential to ensure that there are no cracks, pits, or galling
present in the threads or seal faces prior to make up.

Equipment used to torque Schlumberger collars should be maintained in good

repair, and calibrated in accordance to maintenance procedures provided by
the manufacturer.

In certain cases, collar torques may be specified differently from this specification.
Reduced torque is used to increase the fatigue (dog-leg severity rating). In
underbalanced drilling, increased torque may be required in which case, follow
the UOP.

6 INSTRUCTIONS AND EXAMPLES torque collars, equipment, c onnections

To use these charts you must determine the thread type, the O.D. of the BOX
connection and the through I.D. of the PIN connection, not the bore of the lead-in
taper. Refer to Figure 6-1 on each set of connection charts for measurement
location.

Rounding all measured values to the closest even tenth value is required to use
the charts. Any number falling exactly half way between values must always
round up.

Example
4.12 rounds up to 4.20

3.75 rounds up to 3.80

6.89 rounds down to 6.80

9.68 rounds down to 9.60

6.90 rounds up to 7.00

The values have been calculated for each connection and the actual torque to
apply is determined by picking the lowest torque value from the PIN or BOX
charts for the given joint dimensions.

Figure 6-1: Example 1

You have an 8 ¼-inch drill collar made from non-mag material with a 6 ⅝-REG
PIN connection that you want to make-up to a Saver Sub also made of non-mag
material. To determine the correct torque specification for the connection, follow
these procedures:

1. Determine the actual I.D. of the PIN connection.

If I.D. of PIN measured is 3.75 inches. Round this value to 3.80 inches (to
look up in the chart below).
2. Determine the actual O.D. of the BOX connection.
If O.D. of BOX measured is 8.41 inches. Round this value to 8.40 inches (to
look up in the chart below).
3. Find the chart for a 6 ⅝-REG connection in the specification table.
4. In the chart for the PIN connection, determine the torque by locating the
value that corresponds with the dimension of 3.80 inches and a material type
of non-mag drill collar. The torque value is 32,000 ft-lbs.

Pin I.D. (inches) Material type (ft-lbs)

5. In the chart for the BOX connection, determine the torque by locating the
value that corresponds with the dimension of 8.40 inches and a material type
of non-mag drill collar. The torque value is 70,000 ft-lbs.

Box O.D. (inches) Material type (ft-lbs)

Non-Mag Drill Collar INCONEL 718 Beryllium Copper

8.40 70,000 77,000 57,000
8.60 78,000 85,000 64,000

Note
The lower torque value for the PIN shows that this connection is PIN weak

6. It is therefore recommended that the torque to use when making-up this

connection is 32,000 ft-lbs +/- 1000 ft-lbs.

6.2 Example 2

I.D. I.D.

You have a 6 ¾-in drill collar made from non-mag material with a 5 ½ FH BOX
connection that you want to make-up to a Saver Sub made of INCONEL 718
material.

1. Determine the actual I.D. of the PIN connection.

If I.D. of PIN measured is 3.50 inches. Round this value to 3.60 inches (to
look up in chart below).
2. Determine the actual O.D. of the BOX connection.
If O.D. of BOX measured is 6.89 inches. Round this value to 6.80 inches
(to look up in chart below).
3. Find the chart for a 5 ½ FH connection in the specification.

4. In the chart for the PIN connection, determine the torque by locating the

value that corresponds with the dimension of 6.80 inches and a material type
of non-mag drill collar. The torque value is 22,000 ft-lbs.

connection is 22,000 ft-lbs +/- 1000 ft-lbs.

7 CONNECTION TORQUE CHARTS torque collars, equipment, c onnections

The following are various sized connection torque charts for Field personnel to
use when making up Schlumberger collars and equipment. The torque values in
the following charts are to be used to make up connections for Schlumberger
drill collars. The charts are not to be used to design a particular connection
since the BSR values of certain combinations may exceed the Engineering
recommended values.

A APPENDIX torque collars, equipment, c onnections

The following assumptions and values were used in determining the calculated
torque values in this specification. These assumptions are based on API
recommendations, Drilling & Measurements Engineering modeling, Engineering
lab tests and actual strengths of materials in use by Drilling and Measurements

1. Friction factor used on all calculations is 0.08 (as recommended by API).

2. The program used to calculate the torques uses a nominal tensile stress
value of 62.5 ksi for alloy steel (as per API RP7G Section 2, Paragraph 2.8a)
and for Inconel 718.
3. Non-mag Stainless steel torques are computed with 56.2 ksi nominal stress.
The reduced stress is to minimize galling
4. A torque value equal to 90% of Non-Mag material was used for all BeCu
calculations. This factor is based on actual strain gage testing which showed
comparable stress levels in the connection with a 10% lower torque due to a
reduced coefficient of friction in BeCu.
5. PIN torques are based on the smallest O.D. given in the BOX charts for a
given connection. This was done to reduce the matrix of possible dimensions
and calculations and always produced torques consistent to tolerances of
previously published values which were calculated on actual O.D. and I.D.
situations.
6. BOX torques are based on the largest I.D. given in the PIN charts for a given
connection. This was done to reduce the matrix of possible dimensions
and calculations and always produced torques consistent to tolerances of
previously published values which were calculated on actual O.D. and I.D.
situations.
7. Torque calculations for 7 5/8 H-90 are based on a lower desired nominal
stress per API SPEC 7. These torque values have been reduced by a factor
of 0.8992 times the nominal calculated torque. (56,200 psi / 62,500 psi =
0.8992)
8. All values are rounded down to the nearest thousand to account for maximum
torque tolerance, except for 3 1/2 I.F and smaller which are rounded to the
nearest hundred and reduced by 100 ft-lbs to account for maximum torque
tolerance.
