SAFETY DATA SHEET

Product:
Silica Clay

CHEMICAL PRODUCT AND COMPANY IDENTIFICATION

A. RELEVANT IDENTIFIED USES OF SUBSTANCE/MIXTURE:

As for silica's function in clay and glazes, it provides the melting, or glassifying

agents in a clay body that allow the material to fuse together. Silica, however, has a high
melting point, so it does often need to be fluxed with the addition of other materials
that spurn it to melt at lower temperatures.

B. DETAILS OF THE SUPPLIER OF THE DATA SHEET:

Product Name: Silica clay
Common Name: Sand, Silica Sand, Quartz, Crystalline Silica, Flint, Ground Silica
Chemical Name: Silicon Dioxide

HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

Classification:
This material is considered hazardous under the OSHA Hazard Communications Standard (29
CFR 1910.1200).
Potential Health Effects:

Inhalation:
Silicosis:

 Respirable crystalline silica (quartz) can cause silicosis, a fibrosis (scarring) of the lungs Lung

Cancer:

 Crystalline silica (quartz) inhaled from occupational sources is classified as carcinogenic to

humans.

Tuberculosis:

 Silicosis increases the risk of tuberculosis.

 Silicosis may be progressive; it may lead to disability and death.

Autoimmune and Chronic Kidney Diseases:

 Some studies show excess numbers of cases of scleroderma

Silica Clay

 connective tissue disorders

 lupus,
 rheumatoid arthritis
 chronic kidney diseases and end-stage kidney disease in workers exposed to respirable
crystalline silica.

Eye Contact:

 Crystalline silica (quartz) may cause abrasion of the cornea.

Skin Contact:

 Not applicable

Ingestion:

 If large amounts are swallowed, get immediate medical attention.

First Aid Measures:

Eyes:

 Wash immediately with plenty of water.

 If irritation persists, seek medical attention.

Skin:

 Not applicable

Ingestion:

 Not applicable

Inhalation:

 No specific first-aid is necessary since the adverse health effects associated with exposure to
crystalline silica (quartz) result from chronic exposures.
 If there is a gross inhalation of crystalline silica (quartz), remove the person immediately to
fresh air, give artificial respiration as needed, seek medical attention as needed.

Notes to Physician:

 Treat symptomatically and supportively.
