NIMS IS 700 Reflection

Incident command structure is an important, if not a paramount tool to be utilized in all

aspects of Emergency Management. In ICS 100 we are introduced to the overall structure and

format, as well as certain aspects of the Incident Command System (ICS). ICS 700 delves more

deeply in the structure, format, communications aspects necessary for all those involved in

emergencies, from emergency managers, EMS, Fire, Police, etc. ICS 700 helps to provide

pivotal information that can be utilized in, really, any emergency.

ICS 700 helps us to utilize an all-inclusive and all levels response to emergencies. The

course itself helps us to understand the ideas and components needed to respond properly in a

unified structure to all hazard’s emergencies. Having the course helps to define and understand

the structure of ICS and how to manage those roles. Having the course helps in our

understanding of the different activation phases and the function of an operations center in times

of emergency. We are also presented with why communication is paramount in emergency

situations and ways to communicate effectively to maximize the effectivity of an emergency

response.

When an emergency happens, all of those who are responding need to be following the

same format. ICS, through FEMA’s NIMS, gives us all the format to do so. By following these

guidelines and format we can work as one cohesive unit to better serve the public in their time of

need. The NIMS courses are a great tool to give us this format and should be considered the

“gold standard” to emergency response. NIMS courses give us all a structured approach to

follow. In an emergency, proper communications, as well as a whole team/community approach

to disaster is key; we can make a difference on any emergency by following the NIMS format.

NIMS helps to bring order to chaos.
