Subject: SUGGESTIONS TO GROW INDIAN SPORTS GOODS INDUSTRY BY 100 % AND

GENERATE EMPLOYMENT.

Dear Gaurav Mahajan,

with reference to the meeting of the Sports Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association
(SGMEA), Jalandhar with The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India
(ASSOCHAM), Chandigarh on 13.02.2020 at Hotel Radisson, Jalandhar in which the ASSOCHAM
requested SGMEA to send them a list of major issues being faced by the Sports Goods Industry.

It was also proposed to represent these issues and suggestions on behalf of SGMEA before the
State/Centre Govt for a better solution.

The Association has decided to raise the following issues and suggestions to grow the Indian
Sports Industry and to generate employment:

S.No. Suggestions Affect Data and Comments

1. Classify all 1.) All undervalue stitched and molded Quantities,
Sports balls imported by toy dealers all over India Value and volume
products would shift to home industry. for Inflatable balls,
under FOB US 2.) For all large state tenders and Kehlo Golf balls, lawn-
$ 5 as Toys and India requirements, traders end up tennis balls, lawn-
charge tariff supplying Made in China product and satisfy tennis racket w/s
accordingly L-1 condition. These volumes would transfer string, badminton
to Indian manufacturers. racket w/n string,
3.) Large International brands like Cricket balls, Hockey
Yonex, Li Ning and others have flooded the balls and sticks,
Indian market with cheap badminton Hockey balls and
racquets and shuttlecock. They have very blades, Basket balls,
limited production in India. They would be Boxing equipment,
encouraged to start manufacturing in India. other balls,
4.) International retail brands like Badminton shuttle
Decathlon, Nike and Adidas today buy very corks etc.
limited of these products from India due to (Note: Details
price advantage from Pakistan, China and Attached)
Vietnam. This would partially, if not fully,
shift to India.
2 All equipment 1.) Yonex, Li Ning and some other
used by Indian International sports brands spend millions in
International sponsorship of our athletes. The products
Players and they use are all made in China or other
Indian National countries. If this condition is applied, they
Leagues must would at least assemble these products in
be Made In India and also start manufacturing in India
India. and technology would flow into the country.
Today they have restricted this high end
product technology to factories in China and
Vietnam.
2.) Indian Cricket Team wears the
sportswear which is made in Sri Lanka or
Vietnam. These brands should be persuaded
to import the fabric and get the fabrication
done in India instead of importing the
garment. This would make them bring in
their top end fabrics to India and give
employment to the factories to stitch these
garments. The replica shirts of the Indian
National teams sell in big volumes, stitching
these shirts would give employment to many
workers and promote export of top end
garments from the country.
3.) Japan, Korea, China all had/have the
policy that whenever a big sports event
happen in their country the sports
equipment has to be from the Local brand. Li
Ning, Anta, Asics, Pro-Specs( in the past) are
result of this policy. This is how these
countries built the Sports Industry worth
billions of dollars, while our sports industry
kept on diminishing.
3 Project Sports 1.) Apache the largest OEM for shoes
Equipment, has built up a plant in South India to
Sports manufacture sports shoes for International
Gloves, Brands, other than that there is a very
Apparel and limited shoe manufacturer in India who do
footwear OEM for international sports brand.
under 2.) Sportswear, Sports shoes, sports
common head bags, sports gloves form the largest chuck of
Sports for total “Sports Goods” buying by large brands
creating bigger world over. None of these brands buy shoes,
image. bags, gloves and apparel in large number
from India. If we can generate a common
interest among these industries to market
themselves as “Sporting Goods
Manufacturing destination” many more
number of buyers would be eager to look
towards India as compared to now when
India is considered as exporter of low cost
equipment only.
4 Club Sporting 1.) By nature Sports goods
Goods under manufacturing like ball stitching, protective
the same equipment stitching and various other
benefit which processes are same as Apparel and
are extended Footwear. Also the machine used in
to Apparel and Footwear and Apparel are same as used in
Sportswear Sporting Goods example, stitching,
Industry embroidery, printing, cutting, plotting etc.
Permanently clubbing sports under the same
category would qualify the Sports Industry
the same benefit as extended to Footwear
and Apparel industry. This would help
upgrading of technology and more business
resulting in higher turnover and more
employment.
