You know?, I love the distribution of holidays in the Chilean calendar. There are more than
ten days for us to stay home and sleep late!
The month I like the most is August, because we celebrate our Independence Day on the
15 th. However, the 16 th is also a holiday. It is Armed Forces Day. There is a beautiful
parade in the National Stadium and everybody has Christmas cake and «cola de mono».
February is also interesting since Christmas falls on the 20 th . Remember that this
celebration comes after February 1 st, New Year’s Day.
March, April, and May are wonderful months. Most people take their vacation and enjoy
the best of the summertime. They can take their children with them because school starts
at the end of May.
On the other hand, holidays in Chile are very much related to religious festivities.
For instance, in July we celebrate Easter, October brings All Saints’ Day, which is on the
3rd. November brings St. Peter and St. Paul, and so on.
As you can see, there is plenty of time to relax during the year. I particularly like this
because my memory is not very good. I really need to get a break from work once in a
while.
Don’t you agree?
Exercises:
I. This man is very forgetful so he made at least 11 mistakes concerning days, months,
and characteristics of the celebrations. Help him get the correct information by writing
below.
Example:
Summertime is not in March, April and May. It’s from December 21st through March
20th.

Read the following dialogs. Pay attention to the expressions used in the dialogs to offer food,
to accept, to suggest something different, to make complaints, etc.
Gary : I haven’t made up my mind yet, but I’d like to start with an appetizer.
Would you recommend the shrimp cocktail?
Gary : I’ll have that, then. Please, leave the menu with me.
Waiter : Here you are, sir. Shrimp cocktail with a squeeze of lemon. Have you
already chosen the main course?
Waiter : Oh, yes, it comes with salad or soup. Which one would you prefer?
II. Jane and her friend Caroline want to have lunch at an Italian restaurant.
Caroline : Thanks.
Jenny : Oh, yes. I’ll have the soup of the day to start with. Then, I'd like the
spaghetti a la Bolognese.

Waiter : It’s an Italian appetizer. It’s a variety of cold meats, like salami, and a little
tuna with salad; lettuce, tomato, cucumber and, so on. It’s quite filling.
Caroline : It sounds very good. I’ll try that. Then I’ll have the lasagna; it seems
to be delicious. I’m starving!
Waiter : One antipasto and then lasagna. OK. What would you like to drink?
Waiter : May I suggest some Italian wine? It goes really well with the pasta.
Mr. Turner : Waiter! I think there’s a mistake with my order. I wanted a tenderloin
medium rare and Brussels sprouts. And, I got entrecote! And it’s even
well done!
Mrs. Turner : Yes, and I ordered mushrooms in garlic butter as appetizer, not oysters!...You
see?
Waiter : Oh, no, sir. I think that won’t be necessary. It was just a little confusion.
We’ll bring your order immediately. We are very sorry, sir. Let me
compensate you for this embarrassing mistake by offering the best wine
we have in the restaurant, or the one you prefer, sir. It’s on the house.
Mr. Turner : Oh,...well,...it’s all right. It was just a mistake. We understand that.
Mm,... how about a Chilean wine, huh?

DIALOG
Situation:
Maureen and Dave work for different companies. They haven’t seen each other for a
long time. They meet in the street unexpectedly, and they have the following
conversation.
Maureen : Hey, Dave, where have you been all this time? The last time I saw you was
two months ago or so.
Dave : Well, I was in Hawaii last week and visited Mexico last month. Now, I’m here
in Santiago until the end of the year.
Dave : Yes, usually in the mornings, although sometimes I stayed at the swimming-
pool. How have you been?
Maureen : Last week I was sick. I had to stay in bed a couple of days, but I’m OK now.
Dave : Really? I’m sorry to hear that; you’re never sick. Well, I’m afraid I have to
run. It was nice to see you again. See you later.

A REMARKABLE PARTY
You are having the most remarkable party in history! By suspending time, you are able to
invite any 12 people, dead or alive, to the party. Which 12 people would you choose?
CONSIDER:
1. It is not necessary that you invite important people. You can choose someone who
is interesting for other reasons.
2. Perhaps you would like to establish a theme for the evening. One group of guests
would like to have fun, another group of guests would like to discuss interesting
philosophical questions. Remember that the guests you invite may depend upon the
theme.
For example, you would not want to invite people who might hate each other to an
evening of «fun and relaxation».
