Hints and Solutions

Section A (Physics)

1. (b) The total momentum of a system is conserved when, the net

external force acting on the system is conserved.
Option A is incorrect, since the system could experience force but
its net resultant should be zero i.e. No unbalanced force.
2. (b) Given:
The mass of the body = 1 Kg
Initial velocity = 20 m/s
Maximum height attained by the body = 18 m
According to the conservation of kinetic energy,
Total loss in kinetic energy of the body = Gain in potential energy
+ losses due to air friction

Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

3. (b) Given:
The object distance, u =-20 cm
The focal length of the concave mirror, f =-10 cm
The mirror formula is given as below:

Where,
f is the Focal length of the mirror
v is the image distance from the concave mirror
u is the object distance from the concave mirror
Putting the values in the equation, we get

Thus, the image is formed at a distance of 20 cm from the pole of

the concave mirror.
Hence, Option B is the correct option
4. (d) The range of vision for a normal eye is from 25 cm to infinity. The
eye is able to see clearly all objects in front of itself by adjusting
its focal length suitably. The ability of the human eye to contract
and expand the ciliary muscles to adjust the focal length of the

2
lens such that it can see an object which is nearby and faraway is
called accommodation.
5. (a) The weight of any object at the center of the earth is always zero.
Weight is defined as the product of mass times the acceleration
due to gravity. At the center of the earth the acceleration due to
gravity reduces to zero; consequently, the weight of the object.
Hence, option A is the correct answer.
6. (d) Momentum of a body moving with velocity v is given as,
P = mv …………… (1)
Also, the kinetic energy of a body of mass m is described as,

We can write v from the equation (1) as,

v ……………..(2)

Let the kinetic energy of the two bodies be KE

Then we can write,

As mentioned in the problem the kinetic energy of the particle is

the same. Therefore, dividing the kinetic energy of both the
bodies we obtain,

Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

7. (c) When a body is under free fall, only force due to gravity is acting
on the body. The body is accelerating so the kinetic energy of the
body is changing along with the potential energy since the height
of the falling body is constantly changing every moment as the
body fall towards the earth.
Therefore, option A and B does not remain constant during the
free fall.
The total mechanical energy of body moving, is equal to the sum
of the kinetic energy and the potential energy. The kinetic energy
and the potential energy although do not remain constant itself,
the sum of the two energies will remain constant as the total
mechanical energy of a body under free fall remains constant.
Therefore, option C is the correct answer.

8. (b) If the mass of earth is Me and the mass of the moon is
m, separated by a distance of r. The gravitational force exerted
by earth on moon is given by,

Now, according to the Newton’s third law of motion; every action

has equal and opposite reaction. Thus the force exerted by the
moon on earth will have the same magnitude but in an opposite
direction.
Hence, option B is the correct answer.
9. (b) The strength of the magnetic field between the poles of an
electromagnet would be unchanged if the direction of current in
electromagnet winding were reversed. The changing of the
polarity only reverses the direction of the magnetic field thus
produced.
Hence, option B is the correct answer.
10. (d) The minimum distance is 4f, i.e., when an object is placed at one
of the two centres of curvature and the image is formed at the
other centre of curvature, the image will be real.

Hence, D is the correct answer.

11. (c) A good fuel can be described as the fuel that has a greater calorific
value to the cost ratio. In the table the fuel R has the highest
calorific value to the cost ratio.
Thus C is the correct answer.
12. (d) When the bullet hits the block kept at rest, the block acquires a
velocity courtesy to conservation of linear momentum. Therefore,
the linear momentum and the kinetic energy of the particle
changes.
As the bullet hits the particle some of the kinetic energy of the
bullet get transformed into heat energy and the temperature of
the particle increases.
The gravitational potential energy of the block remains the same
as the height of the particle does not change.
13. (a) For a body thrown vertically upwards acceleration remain
constant(a=-g) and velocity at any time I given by v= u – g × t
During rise of the body, velocity decreases linearly. When
maximum height is reached velocity becomes zero. After the

4
highest point is reached the body will fall down due to the
acceleration of body due to gravity (9.8 m/sec2).
v =- g × t
We can conclude the path of the object by the graph as follow:

Thus, Graph A is the correct answer for the velocity-time graph

shown by the body.
Hence Option A is the correct option
14. (c) The magnetic field due to a current carrying conductor depends
on the magnitude of the current flowing through it and the
distance of the point from the conductor,
B ∝ I and B ∝ r
Where I is the current flowing in the conductor; r is the distance
of the point from the conductor.
It does not depend on the length of the conductor
Hence option C is the correct answer
15. (b) In the given figure the angle of incidence and the angle of
emergence is correctly marked.
Thus option B is the correct answer.

Section B (Chemistry)

16. (c) Bronsted base: A bronsted base is a substance that can accept a
proton from an acid. A bronsted base is proton-acceptor.
When a base gains a proton, the residual part of it has a tendency
to accept the proton. Therefore, it behaves as conjugate acid.
Conjugate base ⇌ Conjugate acid + H+ (gains proton)

Option C is correct.
17. (c) 1 mole of a substance x contains 6.022 × 1023 atoms,
The mass of one atom = 6.642× 10-23 g
The molar mass of X = 6.022 × 1023× 6.642×10-23= 40 g

Number of moles =
Thus, option C is the correct option.
18. (b) Global warming potential is a measure of how much heat a green
house gas traps in the atmosphere up to a specific time horizon,
relative to carbon dioxide. All of these are greenhouse gases.

19. (b) The following figure represents the formation of NYLON-6,6.
Properties of fibre include: strong intermolecular forces like
hydrogen bonding. These strong forces also lead to close packing
of chains and thus impart crystalline nature.
20. (b) Elements having 1, 2 or 3 electrons in the valence shell are
metals.
21. (d) When Mendeleev proposed his periodic table, he noted gaps in the
table and predicted that as-then unknown elements existed with
properties appropriate to fill those gaps.
For example, both gallium and germanium were unknown at the
time Mendeleev published his periodic table. He left the gap under
aluminium and a gap under silicon and called these elements Eka-
Aluminium and Eka-Silicon.
22. (c) Isoelectronic species are those which contain same no. of
electrons.
Now, taking options one by one and counting the electrons
O22- has 18 electrons.
H2 has 2 electrons.
N2 has 14 electrons.
F2 has 18 electrons.
S has 16 electrons.
So, from the above we can conclude that Option C is the correct
answer.
23. (c) • The correct answer is C.
• Dilution is the process where more solvent is added to a solution
to decrease the concentration of the solute.
• In dilution, the amount of solute does not change and therefore,
the number of moles is the same before and after dilution.
The number of moles of solute in the concentrated solution is
equal to the number of moles in the dilute solution. You have
simply increased the amount of solvent in the solution.
24. (b) The equation is balanced when the number of atoms of each
element is the same on both sides.
25. (d) • Lewis acid is defined as the substance (atom, ion or molecule)
which is capable of accepting a pair of electrons. In other words,
a Lewis acid is an electron pair acceptor.
• All cations are Lewis acids because they have a tendency to
accept the pair of electrons. Molecules having a central atom with
incomplete octet can also accept electron pairs.
• Hence, H+ being cation is a Lewis acid and in BF3,the boron is
electron deficient and has an empty orbital, so it can accept a pair
of electrons, making it a Lewis acid.

Now 18g of water contains = 6.022 × 1023 molecules.

∴ 1000 g of water will contain =

= 3.346 ×1025 molecules
(iii) 1 mol of H2O = 18g = 6.022 × 1023 molecules.
Mass of 1 drop of water = 0.05 g
Now 18 g of H2O contains = 6.022 × 1023 molecules.
∴ 0.05g of H2O will contain

molecules
