SHORT INTRODUCTION
The ability to manage time, organise groups, and communicate effectively with
others is fundamental to the success of any project. This unit will present
material that will give the student a fundamental understanding of the
inherent difficulties of project management goals. By highlighting the scale
of the problem and introducing formal techniques, the student will more
readily cope with organising his/her workload. Much of the work undertaken
by students during their first and second yearn will have involved teamwork
and ‘management in the small groups’.

IT Project Management serves as an introduction to ‘project management in the

large’ and its implications, while also addressing the more persistent
concerns of leading projects.

The unit will also develop students’ awareness of the theoretical aspects of
project management and software development techniques. In addition, it will
enable students to develop a range of management skills, including the
ability to plan, organise and implement their year project as part of their
academic qualification in BCS

AIMS OF THE UNIT
The unit demonstrates both theoretical and practical aspects of IT project
management. It aims to develop students’ awareness of the theoretical
aspects of project management and software development, together with a
working knowledge of the skills involved and a range of management
competencies, including planning, organising, implementing and evaluating a
project. It will highlight to students the principles of software project
management, tools of Project Management among other aspects. Finlay but not
least to evaluate what are the primary causes of failure in software
projects.

THE LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the Unit, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the skills, methods and tools for
managing the development of an IT project.
2. Address the use of techniques and tools for project planning and control
3. Formulate, execute and revise a project plan (identifying resources,
milestones and risks)
4. Acquire and develop a range of management skills, including the ability to
negotiate the requirements for a system with a client.
5. Organise the implementation of a system, evaluate and tune the system in
conjunction with the end user.
6. Maintain the system in the light of modifications to the specification
required to meet changing business needs.
7. Implement quality control measures throughout a development project
8. Students will investigate “Why projects fail?” in relation to documented
Case Studies
