Affordances are properties of objects which show users the actions they can take. Users
should be able to perceive affordances without having to consider how to use the items.
Description: It is communicating the clearly about its usage. Wheel shapes scrolls are
clearly shows that it has to be scrolled up and down to move the screen and sometimes it is
used to zoom in and out the documents.
Physical constraints
physical constraint, refers to the ability to constrain the user's actions using
a physical object, be it actual or virtual.
Description: This three point plug and socket restrict the direction of the usage. If we try to
insert the plug in opposite direction we fail. It is an example of physical constrain.
3. Mapping and Affordance
Mapping is the relationship between control and effect. The idea is that with good design,
the controls to something will closely resemble what they affect.
Description: This is clearly mapping the numbers with fan speed. If the number increases
when we rotate the regulator the fan speed also increases and vice versa.
Description: This is clearly communicating the user about the usage that it has to be rotated
if you need to increase and decrease the fan speed.
4. Consistency
Design solution to have similar operations and use similar elements for achieving similar
tasks. These systems are usable and learnable when similar concepts are expresses in
similar ways.
Description: To release the gas from the fire extinguisher the user has to squeeze the
handle. This is universally same for all the fire extinguisher.
5. Feedback
Description: It will communicate feedback quickly once the user registered the finger print
or face recognition by showing the green tick or the by voice. If the system not finds
authentic user it shows Red Cross immediately which means the system cannot find the
person who is registering their presence.
