The Straits Times was founded on 15th July, 1845.
That makes the local paper over 170 years old today.
An Armenian, Catchick Moses started the Strait 1845
Times. His friend, Martyrose Apcar, wanted to start
a local paper, but faced financial issues. In order to
achieve that dream, Moses took over and appointed

In a newsroom, time feels
faster than ever. Everything
needs to be done almost
instantly as content needs
to be shared readily and
quickly to the public. As
such, I am require to upload
and caption my photos very
quickly for the editors to use.
Sometimes it means to file
while shooting for another
job. Time is important.
Selection
During jobs, photographers
take hundreds of images
but the paper is most likely
picking one image of the
rest. Thus, essential to scale
down picks and choose the
few best for upload.
Team Work
As the images are mostly
used for the stories of the
reporters, it is needed to
work with them to find out
the angle they are wrting,
thus creating the image that
best represent that. PRs are
also essential as they give
direction and access, thus
needing to satisfy both sides
Learning Outcomes
The internship has allowed me to learn how to deal
with odd and irregular working hours. This taught me
both mental and physical stress as spot news cannot be
anticipated and requires a photographer to go on site
to take photos of the incident.
It has also taught me the importance of accuracy and
methods to gather info. News photography is pretty
new to me and details for captions are really essential
as the photo still needs to report the facts. This includes:

Beyond the craft of making my images more newswor-
thy, I have learned to upgrade my people skills. The
need to entertain people and treat all differently based
on the situation. This makes the best possible image by
having better access from PR and confidence from sub.
I have also gained the working experience of being
fast and speedy in the newsroom. Things can get hetic
daily and bosses can be very demanding. It has made
me work faster by compromising on idealistic perfec-
tion goals and think of the best possible solution to deal
with a problem the quickest and most efficient way.
The other thing I learned is the workflow and style of
a photojournalist. For my first few and last few days
of internship, I requested to shadow some colleagues
to get a better sense of the process and their thoughts
behind the image. This inspires me and allow me to
seek my style and goal better.
More than that, I learned the idea of quality over quan-
tity better. For the most part, majority of the photogra-
phers would shoot many. But ST taught me to focus.

Beginning with the Straits Times, I shoot lots of profile and news for this main
paper. On 22nd July, my image made it to the cover which was about ST
concert with thousands of people attending for the orchestra and family time
with picinic. This was really an achievement to have a cover page at ST.

Pretty much almost every day there will always be an assignment that is a pro-
file shot of the newsmaker. For this kind of shoots, it is very important to make
subjects less posy and more natural by telling them to do their thing to get a
‘candid’ shot rather than the cheesy kinds as times are changing for the news
image. It is also the photographer’s job to make the subjects comfortable so
that they will look good when they see their image on the newspaper.

Although sometimes it can get a little boring, profiles is usually the opportunity
for the photographer to explore his creativity with a little more control as com-
pared to shooting news where everything is 100% candid.

Sometimes I face challenging PRs or demanding newsmakers who wanr things

their way, which is not the best visual representation of the journalist’s story.
When this happens, I sometimes become passive aggressive about it if not, I
would just meet their needs and then get what I need for Straits Times.

Perhaps my favourite kind of photography editorial wise as stories and mo-

ments are not able to be anticipated. It keeps working exciting as every day
is a new thing, a new story waiting to be told. Fires, murders, openings and
what not is interesting. Working in the newsroom, I pretty much am able to
learned the news in advance as compared to the public that need to wait for
the stories and articles to be published online.

In news, I do not just get to meet new people, but also famous ones. Such as
celebrities, criminals, politicians, heroic people etc. It always nice to see the
person in real life to find out about their true personality behind the camera. In
fact, most people were real and honest.

My favourite part of the news is being able to capture it myself. As news sec-
tion is usually the highlight stories, being able to capture images of that story to
communicate it visually is what I enjoy most. Being on the field first hand and
seeing everything uncensored. Meaning I can control what to show.

Sports

Not being a fan of sports, there are many games and players I do not recog-
nise and as such, cannot fully utilise my knowledge to create the best possible
images for stories related to sport. There are times where lots of my male
friends go ‘wow’ you get to meet this, you get to meet that...Probably a little
unfortunate that I do not have a single clue who they are and have ni interest
in them at all. But then again, it’s part of the job to shoot eveyrthing.

That said, knowledge on the topic is one thing, shooting it is another thing.
Sports can still be interesting to me as it usually involves lots of actions and
movement creating pleasing visuals and more importantly, the emotions dis-
played during a game. Whether it is tears of joy or sorrow, their facial expres-
sion speak for themselves. One thing I like about it is how sports can prove the
true strength and endurance of an individual.

 The New Paper

In my opinion, TNP is the most fun paper to shoot for. Even more interesting
than the Straits Times. Partly because the strories TNP cover is closer to the hu-
man heart, less about success stories or business related ones. Thus, the shoots
are always more interesting and for some reason, was able to explore a lot
more in terms of creativity and to display my cheeky side. Sometimes I feel as
though the editor at TNP can read my mind or something but always end up
picking my favourite pick of all the uploads.

Through observation and experience, I can safely say that TNP is the most
adventurous paper not just the shoots they offer, but also the selection of the
final picture for print. What I mean is that unlike ST, they do not go for the safe
shots. They would use unglam, cheeky shots, quirky ones unlike the flagship
paper. Though I am from ST myself, I still get more excited for TNP jobs.

Bakar membuat keputusan mendalami bidang terse-

Walaupun layak untuk pelbagai kursus yang lain di
politeknik kerana keputusan Peperiksaan Peringkat
GCE N yang cemerlang, pelajar tahun ketiga di Po-
liteknik Ngee Ann itu tetap memilih kursus kejurura-
watan yang ditawarkan dalam Sekolah Sains Kesiha-
tan kampus itu.
Kini, Encik Fikri menunjukkan kecemerlangan
dalam pelajarannya, mencapai Gred Purata Mata
(GPA) sebanyak 3.89. Pada akhir Program Asas Po-
liteknik (PFP) beliau, telah meraih lapan gred cemer-
lang dan telah dianugerahkan hadiah peringatan Mr
and Mrs Ho Choy Shing.
Pengalaman berharga yang boleh diraih melalui
kursus kejururawatan membuat Encik Fikri mengam-
bil keputusan terus menimba ilmu dalam kursus keju-
rurawatan.
“Ramai rakan saya yang mempersoal pilihan saya.
Bagi saya, perkara seorang jururawat lakukan seperti
membersihkan najis memberi erti yang lebih besar,”
ujar Encik Fikri yang mengukir nama dalam Senarai
Pengarah bagi empat semester berturut-turut.
Untuk layak disenaraikan, seorang pelajar harus
berada dalam golongan 10 peratus teratas dalam se-
buah kohort itu buat satu semester.
“Saya gembira yang semangat dan cinta saya kepa-
da kejururawatan dapat membuahkan gred yang baik.
“Pada mulanya, di tahun pertama pengajian saya
di Politeknik Ngee Ann, saya belum pasti jika bidang
ini untuk saya tetapi selepas melalui tiga tahun, saya
sangat menghargai pengalaman yang diraih dan telah
membuat keputusan untuk menceburi bidang kejuru-
rawatan sebagai kerjaya saya,” tambah beliau.
Adanya sokongan daripada ibu dan makcik dan
sepupunya yang sedang melanjutkan pelajaran dalam
bidang kejururawatan juga memberinya kepastian ba-
hawa jika ada cabaran, beliau boleh mendapatkan
nasihat mereka.
“Semua aspek diambil kira dalam diploma ini. Bu-
kan sahaja pelajaran teori malah cara seorang jurura-
wat itu berinteraksi dengan pesakit juga penting. Ia se-
buah kursus yang amat menyeluruh.
“Selain daripada objektif pelajaran harian, kursus
ini memberi peluang kepada pelajar mempraktikkan
apa yang dipelajari.
“Pada setiap cuti penggal, kami dihantar untuk
‘clinical attachment’ di hospital. Saya pernah dihantar
ke hospital Tan Tock Seng dan Hospital Besar Khoo
Teck Phuat. Bagi saya, ini merupakan peluang kee-
masan,” kata Encik Fikri.
Selain daripada aspek pendidikan kursus ini, Fikri
berpendapat bahawa kejururawatan memberi pelu-
ang kepada para pelajar untuk memupuk sifat ihsan.
“Stereotaip bahawa kejururawatan khusus buat
kaum hawa tidak pernah terlintas dalam fikiran saya.
Ramai fikir yang lelaki ‘macho’ tidak sesuai menjadi
nurse tetapi bagi saya, tiada apa-apa yang mengurang-
kan sifat maskulin seseorang jururawat. Lebih menyer-
lah lagi adalah,” kata Encik Fikri, pelajar di dalam ko-
hort di mana hanya satu daripada enam datang daripa-
da kaum lelaki.
“Sepanjang tiga tahun ini, kursus saya memberi pe-
luang untuk saya membesar secara individu.
“Saya dahulu susah untuk membuka mulut, kini,
kemahiran komunikasi saya meningkat dengan lebih
baik selepas keluar dari zon keselesaan saya apabila
perlu berinteraksi dengan pesakit dan doktor.

Mungkin perjalanannya lebih ‘panjang’ tetapi
tekadnya untuk mendalami kejururawatan se-
bagai kerjaya membuat usahanya berbaloi.
“Saya memang minat menjadi jururawat. Skop
pekerjaan seorang jururawat dan kekuatan saya
ada pertalian yang kuat.
“Minat dalam bidang penjagaan kesihatan juga
sudah ada pada diri saya sejak dulu lagi. Kemahi-
ran yang dapat diraih melalui kursus kejururawa-
tan amat praktikal dan relevan,” kata Encik
Nabil.
Beliau yang berharap dapat ke universiti sele-
pas tamat pengajian di Politeknik Nanyang kini ce-
merlang dalam kursusnya, dengan Gred Purata
Mata (GPA) sebanyak 3.83.
Prestasi baik beliau juga telah membuahkan ha-
sil apabila tersenarai dalam Senarai Pengarah Po-
liteknik Nanyang yang diberi kepada pelajar 10
peratus teratas dalam kohort.
“Saya percaya kursus kejururawatan ini mem-
beri pelbagai peluang untuk jalani latihan secara
‘hands-on’ bersama pesakit,’’ kata beliau.
Selain daripada itu, Encik Nabil juga percaya
bahawa kejururawatan memberi peluang untuk
membina diri sendiri secara individu.
Dalam dua tahun mengikuti kursus ini, beliau
telah rasakan bahawa dirinya lebih berasa empati
terhadap orang lain.
“Dalam program kerja sambil belajar di hospi-
tal yang dilancarkan setiap percutian semester,
saya dapat lihat pelbagai jenis orang daripada la-
tar belakang yang berlainan melalui perspektif
yang berbeza. Saya juga sedar bahawa kejurura-
watan adalah kursus dan kerjaya yang sangat ber-
orientasikan pesakit,” kata Encik Nabil yang telah
menjalankan program kerja sambil belajarnya di
Hospital Besar Changi dan juga Hospital Ren Ci.
Pengalaman di kedua-dua hospital itu telah
membuka matanya dan membuat dirinya lebih
matang.
“Satu pengalaman yang tidak akan saya lupa
ialah apabila bekerja shift pagi dan ditugaskan
mandikan seorang pesakit yang sedang murung
kerana penyakitnya telah berulang. Dia suruh
saya lakukan macam-macam.
“Saya ikut sahaja dengan penuh kasih dan sa-
yang. Selepas memakai baju, beliau yang pada mu-
lanya bengis memegang tangan saya dan mengu-
capkan terima kasih dan memberitahu yang sudah
lama beliau tidak diberi perhatian seperti itu.
“Kejadian tersebut menyedarkan saya bahawa
ada perkara yang mungkin kecil di mata sese-
orang tetapi besar bagi orang lain, perkara kecil
itu dapat mengubah kerutan kepada senyuman,”
kata Encik Nabil yang pernah diberi peluang be-
kerja dalam wad pembedahan dan wad medikal
semasa program kerja sambil belajar di hospital.
Detik-detik seperti ini bukan sahaja manis apa-
bila diingat kembali malah telah membawa man-
faat kepada diri beliau.
Apabila ditanya tentang manfaat yang kursus
ini telah membawa kepada dirinya, Encik Nabil
berkata: “Saya dapat lihat perubahan pada diri
saya. Jika dahulu, saya kekok dengan nenek dan
atuk saya tetapi selepas beberapa tahun dalam
kursus ini, secara tidak sedar, apabila saya memba-
wa nenek dan atuk saya keluar, saya tidak lagi
ada rasa janggal. Perkara ini membawa kesan
yang amat baik kepada diri saya sendiri dan ia me-
muaskan saya.”

Tamil Murasu
Some would think I leave the best for the last. Guess what, that is not the case
here. In fact, the Tamil paper, known as Tamil Murasu targeted at the smaller
community is my least favourite of all papers I have to cover. Tamil Murasu
has similar approach to Berita Harian, although not as good, and similar in
the sense of the stories they are going for. I recalled a job I had was to shoot
the longest Dosei in Singapore and it was awarded a place in the Book of
Records Singapore version. That was interesting and memorable.
So if not the story then what is causing the issue? The reports are difficult to get
along with. The funnier part is there is no language barrier because every one
can speak English regardless of which papers you work for. Yet, the reporters
at Tamil Murasu do not seem to undertsand the workflow in ST’s newsroom.
They stay demanding and angry because they choose not to care. As such, I
was quite disappointed to see people from same company having issues.
Conclusion
I have certainly enjoyed my 16 weeks of internship at Straits Times, SPH. In
fact, the reason I chose this place is because it’s the only publisher that can
produce newspapers. I have learnt a lot, beyond the craft, and get to meet
so many interesting people. The world of the media is so connected it makes
the world feel much smaller. Somehow or the other-thanks to social media
too-people know their friend’s friend. It made me rethink about the industry of
journalism. Though I study in design, I feel both are equally important to me
and this exposure will surely contribute to my design philosphy and liking.
Being a photojournalist requires more than a camera. It requires people skills.
It requires the presence of peace and comfort from one’s soul. It is draining
on all ends. Mentally, physically and some times emotionally. Working hours
are really long and the pay is definitely not the best especially if one has a
family to feed. But I always rememeber the reason people chose this field
in the first place. It’s not the money nor the title. It’s about stories. Whether
through writing or shooting, stories is perhaps one of the best asset people
could leave behind for the rest to understand.
