Surrealist art is in line with contemporary development in psychoanalysis.

The movement's
leader (Andre Breton) had studied medicine and worked at a mental hospital in World War 1,
which further informed the trajectory of the study. The Surrealist work of art was based on the
human psychology of unconsciousness as a source. Freudian ideas were used as the basic
concept that informed the surrealist technique of bridging the gap between the unconscious
and the conscious reality. The artwork used in the discussion are Photographs of objects made
by the mentally ill in La revolution surrealist and Salvador Dali, The great Masturbator, 1929.

Freudian ideas have positively impacted the surrealistic work of art in several ways. The
concept of the unconscious as a source has aided in understanding the mentally. The study was
used to recreate the mentally ill reality by use of art. This has helped create a bridge of
understanding between the conscious and the unconscious mind, hence improving the
communication of two unfamiliar worlds. Secondly, it has aided in the utilization of the
unconscious mind to create meaningful art. The unconscious mind is often unique as it directly
translates to unlocked imaginations; hence that helps recreate a unique type of artwork. The
other Freudian idea utilized was the displacement and condensation concept whereby dreams
were deciphered to make meaningful use of the work of art. It had significances as people were
helped to know the true meaning of their goals through a process that only the dreamer and
interpreter would undergo. This aided people in knowing what their unconscious mind was
trying to communicate with them. Secondly, it helped appreciate different cultures' dream
symbolism as different dreams need the interpreter to have an idea of the culture and linguistic
of the dreamer to decipher it. This being presented by work of art helps appreciate the diverse
cultures we have across the world by work of art.

Conclusion

The use of psychoanalysis and Freudian ideas in Surrealist art has aided in improving the work
of art by utilizing unique grounds not done by the previous artist. The use of psychology to
decipher the original thoughts of human beings has created unique techniques and helped us
understand some of our innate desires. It can be used to monitor the mental ill-health of the
people; hence the fantastic work of art has enabled the connection between human beings and
creativity, which is vital and shows progress from the previous works of art.
