PREFACE

The fast development of civilization creates a great demand on mass production of

sophisticated technical goods. Modern technology often relies on utilization of CNC machine
tools which are able to produce various mechanical elements with great accuracy, cutting
tools and computer hardware and software. Hence there is a strong need to employ well
educated technicians and engineers. Since we witness the great progress of the means of
transportation, traveling all over the world is no longera problem (at least from the technical
point of view). It is why the students are able to complete their knowledge in various
countries, they can choose among many offers.
From the point of view of universities, it is necessary to prepare and offer courses for
foreign students. At the University of Science and Technology – AGH, Cracow, Poland, such
summer courses in the field of integrated manufacturing systems have been hold for many
years. The courses include machining that’s why the authors have decided to prepare the
reference book for the students.
The book is divided into two main parts; lectures and laboratory classes. Since the
book is aimed to serve as a reference book for Integrated Manufacturing Systems Course it
does not include all general knowledge concerning machining but only selected topics.
The lectures and reference material concerning laboratory classes include
fundamentals of machining and are based on books which examine and explain selected
topics in the best way and have been published in English. They are included in the list of
books recommended to study. Moreover, the lectures are based on the authors research work,
educational and engineering experience. A lot of information available in the net has been
selected and used to complete the material.
The chapters concerning laboratory classes are organized in agreement with particular
topics:
 turning
 milling and planning
 drilling
 grinding
 EDM (Electro Discharge Machining)
gear manufacturing (with kinematic lay-out of hobbing machine)
thread cutting with an engine lathe

The authors think that the book can be helpful for students from various specialties
including industrial and mechanical engineering. Moreover, Polish students from the
University of Science and Technology – AGH and other technical universities can use it as a
reference book. The authors hope that problems, sometimes not simple, concerning machining
are presented in a clear and interesting way.
