There is a growing interest in the assessment of positive mental health
as a global indicator of societal wealth. Warwick-Edinburgh Mental
Well-being Scale (WEMWEBS) has been proved to be a valid, reliable,
brief and easy-to-use measure of positive mental health round the
globe. Appreciating its widespread and efficient application, we have
adapted the scale for use in Bangladesh following standard guidelines
provided by the original WEMWBS developer and also followed
standard guidelines for cross-cultural adaptation of Beaton et al (2000).
Data were collected from 120 university students using a cross-
sectional survey design. Reliability coefficients for the present study
were beyond the cut-off for acceptance level (Cronbach's alpha, 0.77,
split-half, 0.87), and test-retest 0.72). Convergent validity as assessed
by correlation between the scale and GHQ-12 was found promising (r
= - 0.53). It is evident that the adapted Bangla version of WEMWBS.
appears psychometrically sound and thus can be used by the
professionals concerned with confidence.
