Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

It is unpredictable anymore to hold on purity before entering marriage nowadays.

(Perez, 2013) Keeping purity or virginity before matrimony is a significant matter

nowadays. But also, there several incidences that challenge this matter to prosper. This

attitude is more related to liberalism. Individuals who are favored in gradual reform and

submit to changes than favoring to oppositions’ reaction are considered person with

liberal thinking. Some decisions in life need the application of liberalism, flexibility and

liberty of thoughts. These will release people from bondage of restrictions to adapt

changes; but conservatism is still required. To adhere and lend to preserve the accepted

societal order, specifically on sex matters, signifies conservatism

Also, the sensitivity is necessary in the making of the decision. Ahead of time, it

will help the person to visualize the occurrence of events and consequence of his or her

actions. Perspective of others may also help and considered important before choice of

act or finality.

On the other hand, pre marital sex is a terminology which mostly overhead by the

people from teenagers. Some engaged in this casual way and thinks its effect after they

have committed in such activity. It is a common knowledge, that after man and woman

entered sexual intercourse, they are also entering procreation. This may result early

pregnancies and early entrance to motherhood.

In response to the issue on premarital sex, the researchers came up with the idea

of determining the perception of the students with regards to this issue. Researchers

believe that by this study, they may help youth and other affected social members in

identifying the perception of students towards the matter. This will lead to a creation of a

special activity that will educate their minds about the consequence of the premarital sex.

They also believed that with effective implementation of strategies, it would benefit the

whole society specially the youth.

Background of the study

Southern Luzon State University has its own vision and mission, a school that

accepts and gives qualified students to access quality education.

Researchers would like to find out whether there are number of instances that

students dropped their subject untimely and later information was received that the reason

of not coming back to school anymore is the pre mature pregnancy due to premarital sex.

This facts sounds and the alarm and needs sensible attention.

In the Philippines, a woman having the age below 17 is expected to be unmarried

since the age of maturity is 18. This the age where under the Philippine laws people could

enter into valid contract. Therefore, this will raise the belief that when a woman has a

child at this age she is not yet married and has engaged in premarital sex. While, the

study carry out by the UP population institute exhibit lower ages to those who engaged in

premarital sex. It manifested that (1) out of four (4) Filipinos aged 16-24 are engaging in

premarital sex. (“UP Population Institute”, 2007)

Personally, due to religious restrictions maintained by the researchers, they want

to engage to more facts and ideas that will help them see better understanding. One of the

researchers is a youth formatter in their church. The other one is also a member of a

To better put into perspective it is fairly important to investigate the perceptions

of the Senior High School Students toward pre-marital sex for it is applicable in their age.

For they are inside the said locale, purposively, this research is conducted in order to help

them and their school in educating about its effect and how it may be prevented.

Objectives of the study

With the objective to aid in finding ways to resolve the alarming issues on the

teenage pregnancies, this study is conducted to examine the perception of the Senior High

School students towards premarital sex.

Specifically, the researches aim to evaluate the following objectives:

1. Identify the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of

2. To determine respondents’ perception on premarital sex.

3. To find out where the respondents get their information regarding sex.

3.1. Communications

3.2. Oral Education

3.3. Visual Education

3.4. Entertainment

3.5. Family

3.6. Social Factor

4. Reveal if there is a significant relationship between the profile, perception and

information of the respondents.

Significance of the Study

In the present days where the influence of social media is everywhere,

understanding about pre-marital sex is necessary especially to the adolescents and young

adults. Teenage pregnancy and unwanted babies are the possible consequences of

premarital sex. The acceptance of this consequence is pointless when there are still means

to avoid it. The finds of this study may serve significant role to the:

Students. This will help them identify what are the matters related to premarital

sex to avoid, Avoidance of doing those that will introduce harm to their plans will

provide them better and brighter future.

Parents. Through this study they will guided on what to do to help their children

understand issue about pre-marital sex. They will become aware also on who in the

family had the most influence most on their children

Teachers. Through this study the teachers will able to become conscious on what

approach to be administered to the students so that they would have a better realization

on the issue of premarital sex. In discussing serious issue like premarital sex,

employment of appropriate approach requires extraordinary consciousness.

Department of Education. They will be familiar on the students’ viewpoint on

premarital sex, from that point programs can be formulated and suitable actions can be

made to meet and help the students to become more responsible to themselves and to

their studies. Southern Luzon State University a school that will be producing more

skillful and self-regulated students because of this study.

Society. The General public where the respondents belong will be strengthened

and overpopulation can be avoided.

Future Researchers. This research paper may enlighten them to conduct further

study on topics related to this piece.

Scope and Limitations

The study focused mainly on the Perception on Pre-marital sex of the Senior High

Schools Students in Southern Luzon State University Laboratory Schools, Lucban,

Quezon. The respondents will be 220 Senior High School students of the Laboratory

School.

Definition of Terms

For better understanding of this research study, the following terminologies are

defined conceptually and operationally.

Age- It is the year of existence of a person. (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) In this

research, it is a matter that gives different perception about pre-marital sex.

Awareness- Having and showing realization or knowledge. (Merriam Dictionary,

2006) In this research, it pertains about the knowledge of the students.

Books-a set of sheets of literary works bound into a volume. (Merriam Dictionary,

2006) In this study, the researchers want to know if it affects the students’ perceptions.

Fornication- refers consensual sexual intercourse between two persons not married to

each other. (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) In this study, it defines the sexual intercourse of

two unmarried person who are in the teenage.

Friends- one attached to another by respect or affection. (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) In

this study, the researchers want to know if it affects the students’ perceptions.

Magazines- a publication composing stories, articles or writings and issued periodically.

(Merriam Dictionary, 2006) In this study, the researchers want to know if it affects the

students’ perceptions.

Marriage- The state of being united to the person of the opposite sex as husband or wife

in contractual relationship. (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) In this study, it defines the

conjugality of man and a woman.

Mass Media- communication that is to a large group of people, it can be written, spoken

or broadcast. (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) In this study, the researchers want to know if

it affects the students’ perceptions.

Parents-One who brings up and cares for another, specially their children. (Merriam

Dictionary, 2006) In this study, the researchers want to know if it affects the students’

perceptions.

Perception- The way you think about or understand someone or something; (Merriam

Dictionary, 2006) In this study, it pertains to whether the Senior High Student’s think

and understand premarital sex

Pregnancy- The quality of being a pregnant, in this research, (Merriam Dictionary,

2006) it is when the time when woman had intercourse to men and procreates.

Pre-marital- refers to the stage before marriage; (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) in this

study, it pertain about the stage where two person are in a relationship (Specifically BF or

GF)

Pre-marital sex- Literally means sex before marriage or outside marriage; (Merriam

Dictionary, 2006) in this study one of the reason why students dropped out since it

results to early pregnancy.

Relationship- Connecting or binding; operationally, (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) it

pertains of having relation of men in women.

Sex- The state of being male or female; (Merriam Dictionary, 2006) in this study, it

tells that perception also differs when it comes to sex.

Sex Education- It is the instructions of issues relating to human sexuality. In this study,

the researchers want to know if it affects the students’ perceptions.
