MASS TRANSFER:

 It is the net movement of mass from one location to another where there is a concentration
gradient
 Diffusion – transport of material due to concentration gradients
 Mass transfer co efficient – It is a proportionality constant to the difference in concentrations
and rate of mass transfer. Represented by k c
 Humidification – Water vapour or humidity is added to the air without changing the dry bulb
temperature, always accompanied by cooling/heating of air
 Dimensionless numbers in mass transfer -
- Schmidt number [used to characterize fluid flows in which there are simultaneous momentum
and mass diffusion convection processes.]
- Sherwood number [Ratio of convective to diffusive mass transport]
- Grashof number [Used in natural convection]
- Peclet number [Reynolds x Schmidt][Used in calculations involving convective mass transfer]
- Stanton number [Used to find mass transfer in forced convection flows]
 Mass transfer operations with their applications
- Distillation : Seperating components based on their relative volatility ; Used to separate
fractions from crude oil and in desalination of water
- Absorption :
