Past Perfect Simple

We form the Past Perfect Simple


We use the Past Perfect Simple for:
by using the auxiliary verb had
An action which happened before another action in the past.
and a verb in Past Participle:
Ex. When I arrived to the movie theater, the movie had
Ex. finished.
We can use the time clauses (when, after, before) to link two
Before the play was over, I had events in the past. We use the Past Perfect Simple for the event
cried at least three times. that took place first and the Past Simple for the more recent
event.

Exercises: Ex. Many people had left, before the band started playing.

In negative sentences, we add not to the auxiliary verb had.

Example. It was in Mrs. John’s class that we noticed she hadn´t come to
school.

Time Expressions with the Past Perfect

Example: John does his homework.... The class starts.


By the time the class started, John had done his homework.
The class started after John had done his homework.
John had done his homework before the class started.
John had already done his homework when the class started.
The class started at 6pm. By then John had done his homework.
I had just finished my homework when the bell rang.

Use a range of past tenses including (e.g. the past simple, the past continuous, the past
perfect) to write short stories:
