onan PRINTED BY Vv. 2, SOOBBIAH AND SONS AT THE 0.8.0, ELECTRIC PRINTING WORKS BANGALORE CITY 1932 NEMHRO PREFACE The obyect of the study of Astrology may, for practical purposes, be considered as bemg two.fold Like other sciences 1t contributes to the perfection of the human mind when it 1s pursued for its own sake Unlike them it helps mana great deal in his ordinary business of hfe. That it 1s a science capable of being studied for its own sahe may be evident from the fact that such great mathematicians as wt (Garga), wat (Parasara), zq(Bhngu) and avefiiet (Varahamihira) pursued the study of Astrology with a view to the advancement of knowledge That it hasa uttlitarran sense about itis clear in the following observations Itis a matter of common knowledge that every person aspires for worldly prosperity It has been admitted by emiment persons of all tumes that natural forces eaert their influences upon the human mind The actions of individuals in their every day life depend upon the frame of their mind on the particular occasion These natural forces emanate from the planets Nota few will have actually expert enced that the modus oferanat of any action depends a great deal upon the foresight and wisdom of the individual Master minds have been endowed with 2 much valued insight into the good and bad imfluence at work at the tume and the right understanding of the nature of their surroundings, and so they are capable of adjusting themselves in such 2 way as to secure the end mn view But such persons are few and far between The ordinary vun of humanity 1s endowed only with ordinary intellect nw PREFACE Mighty intellects of yore—those master minds of the past—have, for the benefit of their postenty, gren systematically the effects capable of being produced by the severnl positrons, etc., of the planets To speak of their stupendous work as the product of idle fancy 15 to betray ignorance They have presembed mules to be observed for embarking on important undertakings by reference to the positions of the planets, so that one may be certain that, if itis begun it an auspicious time, it will be crowned with success The forces exerted by the planets at such a time will tend to produce benefic results without any great effort on the part of the person concerned. If otherwise the desired effect ss]! hardly be achiev ed even at the cost of great efforts Planets hive been declared to be productive of mlefic effects when they occupy certain positions It 1s, however, anerror to suppose that these results will unexor ably come about \anous remedies have been recom mended to mitigate, if not to ward off, these malefic influences by the performance of Shantis such as Japa, Hom, Archana, ete , the efficacy of these depending upon the effiaency of their performince and the sincerity of the performer The study of Astrology will, therefore, bestow on the inquirer 1 knowledge by means of which he can iscerttin when he may hase favourable ar unfaxourmble times and how he may alleviate the ympending misfortune 1f any Herein hes the real viloe of Astralogy In the case of certaim horoscopes the position of planets will be such that the natwe thereof will be able to develop 1 strong will power In such an event it will be found thit they can adapt themselves to vanou, conditions and act imsuch 7 Way 1s to emerge PREFACE v uniffected by the malefic influences, if any, resulting from the inauspicious positions of planets at the time of birth or at the commencement of any action as the case may be. Tobe fore-warned 1s to be forearmed A hnowledge of Astrology equips one with such arms and it only remains for one to use one’s will power wherever possible to shape one’s course of action for averting the evil and securing the good Astudy of Astrology presupposes a study of Astro. nomy without which exact planetary positions for basing astrological facts cannot be found This will explain why our socalled astrologers fail miserably in their predictions and hase brought themselves and the science they pretend to hnow into contempt On the other hand, instances can be cited in which predictions made years ago by great astrologers have come true with startling precision The mahers of these predictions were not the men that made a Ining by Astrology, but venerable orthodo. Brahmin astrologers of the Teiesan type. It 1s not possible to say that these predictions were hap- hazard guesses, for those that made the predictions invariably made sure of therr preliminaries by ascertain. ing previously that certain conclusions they drew from the horoscopes, etc, shown them by querists tallied with actual facts The accuracy of the horoscopes once established, these eminent astrologers vere able to announce all facts connected with the owners of the horoscopes, their relations near or distant, ther newh bours and all else that had anything to do with them and their concerns About 42 yeirs ago, a sage of this description lived in one of the lovely villages of the Amaravati Valley in the Coimbatore District and gave vi PREFACE out his predictrons Many things which he sard m the course of a casual conversition with his son-tn-lau, the writer's father, regarding Ins future certainly came to pass Emboldened by very favourable antecedents and goaded on by innate curiosity to get to the springs of Ast. tology, I cast about for some standard astrological work to be taken for serious study and fortunately hghted upon wraikata (Jatakapanyata) which professes to contin all thitss choice in W4igat (Gargasimhita), TWeaeaiear (Parasara Samhita), arraer (Saravah), gestae (Brihat . Jataka) and other such works, and winch, beyond contra. diction, 13 about the best surmmary on horoscopy enshnn ing several rare informations not at ali found in any other work of ts hind In thus connection, a word about its author Vaidyanatha Dikshita would be quite appro priate As he himself siysin the 2nd and last slohas of the work, he isa descendant of the Bharadwaja family and son of Venhatadri Somes iy that hess the identical Vaidyanatha, the author of Prataparudnya and some ether works and annotations Again, he has been declared bp Kesava Danagna as his Guru, which fact is borne out by the followmg Slokain his work yRAaat (Muhurta tatva) = - * . sila maagerng Teena 1 sqreaey ytraarragd ta Fara. Ganesa Dayagna, the son of Nesava Dawagna wrote his Grahalaghava m 1520 A D So Kesasa Danagni must have been born about 1450A DIT Vaidyanatha Dikshita should have been his Guru, he must have been born between 1425 A D and 1450 A D. PREFACE vil To revert to my chorce of Jatakapaciyata Several works of Astrology such as (1) Prajapathya (snr) (2) Bnhat prajapithya (geetrartat) (3) Surya Hora (agra) (4) Shanda Hora (eerzérq), (5) Vasishta Hora (afaeérn), (6) Saunaka Hora (sitrsdra), (7) Kausika [lora (#liréra), (8) Garga Hora (ara), (9) Yavana Hora (aaaétar), (10) Mandayya Jataka, (aiessqsraz), etc, are not wholly available, though several slokas therefrom are met with here and there There are other works such as (1) Jataka. bharana (arenm), (2) Sarwartha Chintamam (aah. fueqrala), (3) Phaladeepiha (wediig71), (4) Horamaharanda (etuaw), (5) Jatahadesi (arattia), etc , but these are hot complete in themselves, as they do not deal with all the branches of horoscopy In Jatahaparyyata, one will not fail to find that the author Vaidyanatha Dikshita has judiciously brought together exceptionally valuable materials from several works of classical‘authors and that he has touched upon almost all the branches Bmhat Parasara Hora (aeareméta) which its now vailable though complete 1n itself, 1s too voluminous I therefore selected Jatahapaiyata for my translation In the notes published im the edition of 1915, T have suppked and supplemented in appropriate places information regarding Rasmi, Grahavasthas, Madhyamayur yoga, Raja yoga, Ashtakavarga Kalachakea and Dasas which were either omitted or briefly touched upon or dealt with in the Jatakaparyata Advantage has also been tahen of the opportunity to revise the onginal translation of some of the slokas of the text, and to furmsh additional explana. tions accompanied by :lustrations where such elucrdations were considered necessary No pains have been spared to collect together and quote all available parallel vin PREFACE passages freely and fully, almost perhaps to superfluty, so that the trins}ition with these notes may prove to be a self contained and useful compendium on the subject It 1s a trite but nevertheless a very important obser vation that as Time lapses our knowledge increases and our vision widens and thit unless we use them constantly, we run the risk of making them run to waste So since the publication of my Notesin 1915, my aim was to bring out a much more substantial edition of Jatika panyati, but I may perhips be forgiven for saying that my progress has been delayed, not only by heavy family responsibilities, but alsa by heavy professtonal dutzes till 1931, when I sigorously set to work it this revised edi tion of Jatihaparyata which is nearly double the origimil one The present Work appearmg in tyo Volumes includes the following new fertures — (1) Opportunity has been taken to append notes where ever possible and that too next to the translation of each sloha 2) A zodiacal chart showing the Sapthavargas tm one lance has been included (3) Much valuable mformation bas been added in the Ashtahavarga chapter, and the Ashtahavarga plate 1s also explained (4) An exhaustive index has been made out to facilitate easy and ready reference Before I close this preface I must express my deep sense of gratitude to my late revered father M Rk RY, S Venkatarama Sastnar, 8 a, who aided and advised PREFACE ix oe me at every stage of my translation of Jatakaparjata, and I acknowledge with profound respect for him that much of whatever 1s good 1n the interpretation of several passages is owing to his suggestion, his care and his judgment. Mr. N. Parameswara Iyer of Rangoon also helped me greatly with valuable suggestions and copious quotations from works maccessible to me 50, 3rd Cross Road, Basavangudh, Bangalore City. V.
