Started to take trumpet lessons at age 13. Studied music at the Tennessee State University. Further studied trumpet at the University of Michigan. After serving in the US Army in the mid ’50s, worked as a music teacher at a high school in Atlanta, Georgia. His professional breakthrough came when he was discovered by Alfred Lion of Blue Note label and made a sensational recording debut in 1957. Shortly after his second release from Blue Note, Louis joined the Horace Silver Quintet in 1958. Though his career as jazz musician had already begun to flourish, Louis left the Silver group after three months in favour of the stability of school teacher life. Teaching has since been his profession. 20 years later Louis made the recording come back for SteepleChase with SCCD 31096 “Just Friends” in 1978 and in the following year SCCD-31121 “Prancin’”. Recently Louis Smith has become more active on the jazz scene and he has made several tours in the USA as well as in Europe and the USSR.
