This SOM Is optimized for single pilot operations in light training environment as well as private ‘operations and the philosophy behind this manual is based on reducing crew workload while maintaining the highest possible level of safety. SOM isa set of procedures that serve to provide common basis forall erewmembers, usually unfamiliar with teach other's experience and technical capabilities. In a well-standardized operation, all crew members know their own duties during the flight, and the mission can be accomplished safely and smoothly. ‘The Philosophy of Operation section has directives related to how the operation should be conducted, ‘This SOM doesn’t supersede C172 POH. If there isa disagreement between SOM and the POH, the POH has the final authority. SOM also doesn’t supersede any valid law or regulation. ‘Amenciment changes are marked with a vertical thick bold line in the text margin. 1.01 Procedural Deviation and Its Relation to Safety The highest percentage of problems that generate crew-caused accidents and incidents manifest themselves in the form of procedural deviation. Ifthe flight goes well, these deviations are not perceived and in most cases are left unresolved, but they become apparent following an incident or an accident. 4.0.2 Check lists ‘As an appendbx C1 is represents the C172 Normal Procedures. The intention is to eliminate any doubts regarding Flight Standards that may accur during the operation ofthe airplane. ‘The intention is to guide the crew on how to perform the required tasks to correct a situation or condition. 14 FLEET BAA Cessna 172s are C172S version with 10-260-L2A engines and standard tanks. They are also equipped with 100 and approved for RNP1 operation. wy-Bak Leer WTS. wrt Ly-FTA BAA can use ather C172 aircraft without modifications to this SOM for short leasing periods. Note that the call for “checklist completed!” is performed when all by heart iterns are completed. Caltouts Callouts are aids in maintaining awareness of the crew as to the status of given tasks. They are extremely important in aiding situational awareness. They are made to indicate that a system has deviated from the assigned parameters or to describe tasks or events requiring a high level of monitoring on highly dynamic and unstable events. Critical phases of fight Phases of fight with a high workload. Flight phases included takeoffs, landings, taxi procedures and all parts of the flight operation considerad as critical by the fight crew. Emergency When emergency is used to describe a procedure or checklist, It refers to a non-routine operation in which certain procedures or actions must be taken to protect the crew and the passengers, or the airplane, from a serious hazard or potential hazard, Emergency situations may result in personal injury or loss of life if correct procedure is not followed. Expanded procedures {A description of sequential procedural steps with detailed explanatory descriptions and/or instructions ‘accompanying each step. Pilots are expected to know Normal Exsanded Procedures by memory. Flight crew Crewmembers that conduct the airplane's flight operation. The flight crew will be composed of the instructor/pllot in command and usually (depending on mission) a student or co-pilot GBAA Training issue No. 1 Revision No.7 Effective date: OA0ED010 Cesena 1728 Batraining STANDARD OPERATIONS MANUAL Immediate action ‘An action that must be taken in response to a non-routine event so quickly that reference to a checklist is not practical because of a potential loss of airplane control, incapacitation of a crewmember, damage to or loss of an airplane component or system, which would make a continued safe fight improbable. Land at the nearest suitable airport / Land as soon as possible / Land as soon as practical Some checklists require landing at the nearest sultable airport, land as soon as possible or land as soon as practical. Land as soon as possible means that landing should be made to first safe place, even if outside of an airfield, Land as soon as practical doesn’t mean that forced landing to outside of an airfield is always required. ‘These statements may be presented below the associated emergency/abnormal characterization of at the beginning of a task that requires so. When the crew determines that significant threat to safety is present, ‘they should always accomplish the earliest possible descent, land at the nearest suitable airport regardless of having this statement present in the checklist. Master switch ‘Master Switch is split in two switches labeled BAT and ALT. Normally both sides are used simultaneously. For ‘example, when Expanded Normal Procedures states Master Switch ~ ON, bath sides are switched to ON. position. Some emergency/abnormal procedures require independent use of BAT of ALT. Avionics power switch Avionics power switch is located on the right side of ignition switch, between circuit breakers. All radio equipment may be turned ON and OFF by using the switch. Pilot flying (PF) Pilot who is controlling the path and power setting ofthe airplane inflight (its the primary responsibility of each pilot to monitor the airplane). Pilot incapacitation Situation where one of the pilots / crew members is not able to perform his / her duties, Plot in command (PIC) Pot legally responsible for the operation of the airclane and who commands the operation of the airplane. He has the authority to take actions, to request or to delegate any crewmember action as he finds. ‘appropriate to improve the safety of the flight. Stabilized approach ‘An approach is stabilized only ial of the following criteria are met: proper flight path, proper sink rate, stabilized approach speed and power. Approach is recommended to be stabilized approx. 200-300ft above ‘threshold but no later than threshold. During IFR approach the approach must be stabilized not later than 1000 ft AL, Student ‘Student is acrew member who is receiving fight instruction and who is normally a PF during schoo! flights. VSPEEDS \V, = Maneuvering Speed is the maximum speed at which full or abrupt control movements may be used. ‘Vie= Maximum Flaps Extended Speed is the highest speed permissible with wing flaps in a prescribed extended position. Vsq = Maximum Structural Cruising Speed is the speed that should not be exceeded except in smooth air, then only with caution, Vne = Never Exceed Speed Is the speed limit that may not be exceeded at any time. Vref = Landing reference speed Soft at threshold with selected flap setting. V, = Stalling Speed or the minimum steady flight speed at which the airplane is controllable. ‘Vjp= Stalling Speed or the minimum steady flight speed at whi configuration at the most forward center of gravity the airplane is controllable in the landing V_= Best Angle-of-Climb Speed is the speed which results in the greatest gain of altitude in a given horizontal distance, Vy = Best Rate-of imb Speed is the speed which results in the greatest gain in altitude in a given time. OBA Taming TsueNo 1 Revision No. 7 Effocive date: 04062019 Cessna 1728 ing STANDARD OPERATIONS MANUAL Batra 4.3 PHILOSOPHY OF OPERATION 10 1.3.1 Safety priority Crew member and public safety are the highest priority. 1.3.2 Communications Non-essential conversation should be avoided during high workloed flight phases. 1.3.3 Monitoring of operational performance Allefforts must be made to encourage crewmembers to report any difficulty related to human factors. This is fundamental to spot potential fight standard deficiencies before they result in incidents or accidents. Granting confidentiality in this process will respect the importance of these reports. Using disturdance reports to correct and improve flight standards is an important process of assuring the quality of flight operation. 1.3.4 Supervision of fueling ‘The flight crew is responsible for supervising refueling in all stations except when refueled or monitored by BAA Training's trained staff member. 4.4. CHECKUST PHILOSOPHY ‘The use of the on-board checklist is based on the assumption that the pilot in command has been properly trained on the type of airplane and therefore have a thorough knowledge of the airplane's systems and procedures. tt further assumes that he knows the consequences of not performing the right actions at the right time. ‘The crew should exercise judgment to establish the proper coordination between Normal and Emergeney/Abnormal procedures towards the safest course of action. Physical appearence of normal checklist and emergency/abnormal checklist in airplane may differ from the appearance presented In this SOM but al the Items in those checklists are exactly same. Difference in appearance is due to simplify the reading of checklists in airplane. ‘BAA Traning Tesue No. 1 Revision No.7 Eifectve date: O06/2078 Cessna 1728 Ba training STANDARD OPERATIONS MANUAL 1" 14.1 Normal checklist The crew must accomplish all the C172 SOM Expanded Normal Procedures required for a particular flight. The Normal Checklist is just 2 memory aid to assist the pilots, so they do not forget actions which, if not carried ‘out, can result in some type of risk to the airplane, to any ofits systems, to its occupants, to the operational environment or can affect passenger comfort. Specific regulations also ask for items to be included in the checklist. ‘The Normal Checklist has been divided and named according to its specific phase. In case of interruption the pilot should halt the reading, and when he restarts it he must be sure of where he stopped. Ifnot, the checklist must be read from start again. An interrupted checilist is kept on top of the glare shiald to ald the crew to remember the interruption. When a specific phase of the checklists. completed, an announcement must be made. 14.2 Emergency/abnormal procedure ‘The Emergency/Abnormal Checklist will provide the procedural steps required to resolve non-normal situations on the ground or in flight. 1.5 MISCELLANEUOS 454 Communications Normal communications between the airplane and ATC should be performed by the PF. 45.2. Briefings Briefings should be conducted with casual language and personal style to prevent the repetitious use of sentences and terms, 15.3 Shoulder harnesses Shoulder harness must be worn always when seated. 1.8.4 Headphones ue to engine noise it's recommended to always use headphones or hearing protection when engine is running. Strobe lights: Strobe lights have two functions, You may have both wing tip and fin strobe lights ‘on’ simultaneously or youay have only fin strabe light ‘on’, Fin strobe light (emer, mode) is used for signaling that the engine is, aboutto be started or itis running. Wing tip strobe lights are functioning as recognition lights to others. Wing tip strobe lights are switched ‘on’ (norm, made) when crossing holding point markings when lining up for departure or crossing the runway, Wing tip strobe lights are switched ‘off’ when crossing holding point ‘markings when exiting the runway after landing or crossing the runway. If strobe lights (fin/wing tip) cause distraction during flight or glare to outsidersis suspected, you may choose to leave strabe lights off (ref. SERA.3215), Landing lights: In addition to ald the visibility of the landing area the landing light is used to attract attention of our aircraft to others. It shall be turned ‘on’ when lining up, when approaching an airfield a the control zone boundary or at least 10 minutes prior to entering airfield trafic pattern, whichever is earlier. Landing light should be turned ‘off’ when clear of the control zone, when passing 2000 ft in the climb, or in weather conditions where the light may cause disturbance. The landing light can remain ‘on’ at the pilot’ discretion also in situations not described above. For example, in poor visibility the landing light should be ‘on’ to help the aircraft be seen. Landing light should be switched off when doing the ‘after landing checklist’ by heart after passing runway holding point. Navigation lights: ‘To he switched on at the start of before engine start-checklist and switched off after engine shut down, Navigation lights can be switched off at pilot discretion during daytime operations, but they are mandatory at right. 1.5.6 Use of pitot tube, fuel vent and engine cover Pitot tube and fuel vent cover must be installed when A/C: needed according to situation. Remove covers during pref left outside of hangar for parking or when ht inspection. Between fights and when airplane has been in warm hangar, set engine cover when airplane is outside from hangar and air temperature is below +5 °C. Remove engine cover before engine start, Do not use engine cover when it is raining. If engine cover has gotten wet, dry itn a warm and ventilated place (e.g in hangar). Do not stow wet cover in airplane's baggage compartment. Tow or push the airplane from the root of the propeller or wing struts. 0o not tow the airplane from the tow bar only. Pushing down and turning, the aircraft from horizontal stabilizer is prohibited. ‘When the airplane has been town to place from where it can taxi under own power (e.g apron parking area), remove tow bar immediately 1.5.8 Cleaning Clean windshield and other windows with clean, soft cloth and AGC/22 Aircraft Glass Cleaner ~solution or ‘with clean water. Use plenty of cleaning solution or water and wipe it off with straight vertical sweeps, not ‘with circular motion. Do not rub the plastic with a dry cloth. Clean fuselage with cleaning solution or water and sponge. 1.5.9 Crew member incapacitation Crew member incapacitation is @ possibility In all age groups and during all light phases, ranging from sudden death to partial loss of mental or physical performance. Proper crew coordination involves checks and cresschecks using verbal communications and standard operating procedures to detect this problem. Failure of any crewmember to respand to a second request or a checklist will be considered a pilot incapacitation condition and crew action is immediately required. Some callouts are set to reveal crew ‘member incapacitation (for example "clearance to cross runway"). Crew member incapacitation can arise from a wide variety of causal factors and can be transient or permanent, partial or complete, obvious or subtle. Obvious incapacitation is immediately apparent and can ‘occur suddenly. It is usually prolonged and results in a complete loss of function. Subtle incapacitation occurs more frequently than the cbvious type. By definition, it s not obvious to others. Itis frequently unreported, partial in nature and usually transient, lasting from a few seconds to several ‘minutes ts insidious because the affected crew member may look well and continues to operate but have ‘only a partially Functioning brain. The affected crew member may not be aware of the problem or capable of rationally evaluating it 1.5.10 Recommendations for use of Garmin 1000 Cn local fights at traning areas it’s recommended to use MAP page of the G1000. During crass-country flight it's recommended to use Default Nav -page. OBAA Training Tseue No.7 Revision No. 7 Erfecive date: O€08/2019 Cessna 1728 Gitraining STANDARD OPERATIONS MANUAL 14 1.5.11 Approved maneuvers for student solo flights Generally, on solo flights students may practice only those maneuvers which have been thought during, training fights. However, no aerobatic maneuvers (for example spins, loops, barrel roll, etc) except those listed below, are allowed on students’ solo fights. Approved maneuvers for students are: ~ Steep Turns up to 45° bank Stalls from coordinated straight and level flight (no power on stalls, stalls during climb, stalls during descent, stalls during turn or whip stalls) 1.5.42 Use of mixture control During taxiing, engine run-up and take-off mixture is normally rich On level flight, mixture may be left on full rich if fight is local flight. Lean mixture when on cross country flight and power is 7596 or less. Set mixture rich when commencing climb or descent. However, during climb, when above 3000 ft, mixture should be leaned for maximum RPM. Set mixture rich for landing, 15.13. Operative fight plan (OFP) Preparing the OFP, loading calculations and takeoff and landing performance calculations for all fights must be performed manually. In exceptional circumstances, the flight instructor may permit fight planning with some flight planning software, 1.5.14 Use of fuel selector C172 has 4-way fuel selector (30TH, LEFT tank, RIGHT tank, OFF). When refueling on sloping surface and/or to max fuel capacity, fuel selector should be on elther LEFT or RIGHT tank position to eliminate fuel transferring towards the emptier tank. During preflight inspection, the fuel selector movement is checked, ‘and BOTH is selected, 1.845 Emergency location transmitter (ELT) C172 has panel mounted remote switch for ELT on a right up corner of instrument panel. Pilot must be familiar with the operation of ELT before commencing a fight. ABA. Slow flight When practicing slow fight, minimum altitude is 1500 ft AGL. EXPANDED CHECK LIST 3.1 PREFLIGHT INSPECTION Note ‘Visually check airplane for general condition during walk around inspection. Use of the refueling steps and assist handles (if installed) will simplify access to the upper wing surfaces for visual checks and refueling ‘operations. In cold weather, remove even emall accumulations of frost, ice or snow from wing, tal, fuselage ‘and conisol surfaces. Also, make sure that control surfaces contain no intemal accumulations of ice or debris. Prior to fight, check that ptot heater is warm to touch within 30 seconds with battery and pitct heat switches on. It night ight is planned, check operation of all lights, and make sure a flashight is available for all crew members, Preflight Inspection can be performed also as by heart check, CABIN ~ Pitot Tube Cover...
