Analysis Problems using Stress Concept

Example 4.1
Example 4.2
Area of one wire of 5mm diameter = 𝜋 = 19.7 mm2
Resultant stresses when only self weight is supported

When a live load of 6 kN/m is also imposed,

Example 4.3

Solution:
(a) Prestress + Self weight
At top fibre = 2.15 - 4 + 1.85 = 0
At bottom fibre = 2.15 + 6.25 – 2.9 =5.5 N/mm 2

(b) Prestress + Self weight + Live load

At top fibre = 2.15 - 4 + 1.85 + 3.3 = 3.3 N/mm2
At bottom fibre = 2.15 + 6.25 – 2.9 – 5.15 = 0.35 N/mm 2
Example 4.4

Solution:

To find the maximum bending moment at the centre of span without causing
tension at the soffit (means bottom face) of the beam, consider the stress at
bottom as shown in fig below:
To ensure No Tension at the bottom , + − =0

Or , + =

2.87 + 2.87 =

Hence M = 5.74 x 15 x 106 = 86.1 x 106 Nmm = 86.1 kNm
