A city is a big community, with all the services needed not only by people living in the

city itself, but also those who live around it.

There are bus and railway stations, link with motorways, schools, colleges,
universities, hospitals and banks, police, fire and ambulance stations; factories, industrials
estates, shopping centres with shop of all kinds which people visit from miles around.
Sometimes a city will have an airport or even docks if the city is near to the sea.
There are museums, art galleries, exhibition centres, public libraries and newspaper
offices.
When there are more than a million people living in a city, it is called a “metropolis”,
which means “Mother City”.
Everything centres around the city and more so the metropolis as far as the
surrounding areas are concerned. Towns, villages, country areas, they all depend on the
city for the services which are found there, with amny people journeying inti the city to
work, school or hospital. So, there have to be road and rail link to all parts, not just the
centre.
The town often expands by extending buildings, streets and services to
surrounding areas. But if this growth is uncontrolled, huge over-spill populations are
created without any proper services, illegal or makeshift housing and a hard life for the
people.
