Statement of purpose

Fascinated by numbers as a kid I remember looking through the sunroof in my

bedroom and tallying the number of stars present in the sky every night. This hobby
of counting the stars gave me a great deal of pleasure and also aroused me with a
series of questions regarding why the number stars that I counted varied from
night-to-night. Such questions made me formulate various interpretations so as to
why I saw different quantities of stars every night. I also remember questioning my
mom so as to why she added the exact quantity of salt and why not more or less of
it. The topic of Quantitative economics in 11th grade benefited the analytical side of
me by helping me understand how people choose among various choices on a
day-to-day basis. “Consumer Theory” and “Rational Choice Theory” has helped me
recognize how people choose to use their money and how they make choices on a
day-to-day basis. That was when I realized my love for economics and got me
interested in delving into the depths of this subject and encouraged me to take up a
bachelors degree in economics at the University of Toronto.

My experiences at Vidyaniketan and Ryan international school have helped shape

into the person I am today. The abundant academic and extracurricular activities at
these schools have helped me explore my interests and pave a clear path to achieve
my career goals.

My recent interests in trading and investing securities has provided me a deeper

understanding of the Indian markets. The constant need to analyse the operations of
different companies while investing has helped me inculcate the habit to differentiate
between minute differences and the application of various theories of investment
such as “Accelerator Theory of Investment” has helped me make sound choices.
Adding to this my internship at a business analyst company called Freshbooks has
exposed me to the real-world corporate environment. My time at the NGO Child
Udyog has helped me notice the existing social and economic inequalities in the
society and this has developed an urge in me to become a responsible citizen and
try to eliminate the existing problems in the society.

Motivation from financial analysts such as Meredith Whitney and Mario Gabelli and
my passion for numbers and quantitative analysis will help me contribute to my
fellow students and keep me dedicated to achieve my goals during my time at the
University.

The high appealing value for this course from the University of Toronto and students
traveling from different countries to enroll in this course has created an increased
competitiveness and diversity at the university. I believe that with my appealing
interests in the subject and my capabilities to contribute and learn from my peer
group and professor and the welcoming environment, an extraordinary alumni base
and excellent faculty at the university will get me a great educational experience and
help pursue a career in financial analysis.
