Hikikomori: Japan's Vanishing People

The hikikomori it’s a unique Japanese phenomenon. This term it’s used to describe people
that are reclusive adolescents or adults who withdraw from society and seek confinement.
They refuse to leave their rooms or even talk.

This documentary shows us the lives of different men and women who talk about their
experiences and how they began to withdraw from society. Most of them feel hopeless,
and see no meaning in life. But not all of them are depressed nor wants to commit suicide,
some of them just feel comfortable without human contact.

Most specialists that appear in the documentary state that this phenomenon occurs due to
the strict Japanese society. Some cannot keep up and as a result they feel useless.

I think the main lesson is that if these people would have more contact with their
neighbors, family or society they would avoid the feeling of solitude. People should pay
more attention to others and try to build a real community spirit with proper
communication. I think that other people might be interested because this phenomenon it’s
not common in the rest of the world.
