CLEANING

Cleaning out your closet is truly the last thing you want to do, but it always feels so good to get rid
of the old and make room for the new! Now that spring has arrived and (most of us) are still working
at home, it’s high time that we get around to the task. So to help you out, we reached out to our Jet

EYE CANDY
We interupt your beauty binge to bring you some important news: Right now
the beauty industry is all about freedom, creativity and presenting yourself in
a way that’s comfortable to you. So why not experiment with one of these FUN
makeup trends this spring! TEXT SKYE LAVIS

HIGHLIGHTER REEL
Love a neon cat eye? Great, because it’s
a big trend for spring. Just make sure
to swap your basic black liquid liner
for a bright, neon-colored one (think
pink, green, orange, yellow). If it seems
daunting to do a full cat eye, keep your
bold liner close to the lash line and
create a thin, neat line that has a slight
feline flick. Then, sit back and wait for the
compilments to roll in!

EMBELLISHED EYES
Just because covid ruined your festival plans,
doesn’t mean you can’t experiment at home. Think
adult arts and crafts project - but make it fashion. Get
yourself down to the craft store and stock up on pearls and
gemstones because embellished eyes are in! Whether you want to
try a simple line or bedazzle your entire eyelid is up to you.
Tip: to avoid a disco (eye)ball, be careful not to get the sparklies
under your eyelid.

LIFE beauty

WHITE LINER
If you’re up to experimenting with cool eye makeup, but aren’t
brave enough for say, neon liner or full-on pearls, then the white
eyeliner trend is a great way to get your feet wet. It’s fun, fresh, and
feels completely unexpected—but not overly extra. If you prefer,
you can start with your classic black liner and then add a thin
white liquid liner to contrast and top it off. This is a gorgeous day
look that will make your eyes appear bigger and brighter.

GLOSSY LIDS
Two words: glossy lids. Simply apply a soft shade,
blend out and add a clear eye gloss over the top
to amp it up. There are also a ton of creamy
eyeshadows if you prefer a lighter texture
with the same gleamy effect. This look
is ideal for a date night at home!

FLOATING LINER
If you’re not the glossy eyelid
kind, why not let your inner
artist come out and play around
with thin, graphic lines. It’s time
for vibrant colours and geometric
shapes to replace traditional going-
out looks. You can extend a design
from your lash line or let it float on
your eyelid. Your eyelid is but a canvas!

HUED MASCARA
Ahh mascara, our ride-or-die, holy-grail product -
it’s time for a spring upgrade. Bright, bold lashes are the
best addition to any spring outfit. On your natural lashes, it’s not
actually that shocking and before you know it you’ll be hooked!
Start experimenting with a dark blue or purple and go from there.
If you are going for a more dramatic look, then go ahead and try a
pair of falsies !

AUNATUREL
Organic beauty ingredients your body will thank you for! TEXT SKYE LAVIS

COCONUT OIL
Whether you’re using it on your skin or adding it to your morning coffee,
the health benefits associated with coconut oil are impressive. Ingested, it’s
unique combination of fatty acids helps to burn fat and provides quick energy
to your body and brain. It also raises HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood,
which may help reduce the risk of heart disease. Applied externally, coconut
oil is a nourishing hair mask, moisturiser and teeth whitener.

OLIVE OIL
Olive oil may well be one of your cooking staples but it is also a moisturising
skincare essential. Olive oil contains a very high concentration of an
ingredient called squalene which is an antioxidant that prevents premature
aging and sun damage. It’s moisturising properties do not strip away natural
oils fom the skin, thereby allowing you to sweat and shed cells, without
causing irritation or clogging pores.

RAW HONEY
Everyone is buzzing about honey, and this is why: Used on skin, raw honey
can exfoliate, smoothen and brighten your complexion. It is also used as
an antiseptic, helping with breakouts, rashes, wounds and the appearance
of scars. In hair, it also works wonders. “Honey is a rich sugar that deeply
nourishes the hair without wearing it down. It prevents split ends and
minimises breakage.” explains Roger Medina, hair expert for Garnier Hair.

CUCUMBER
There is a reason they say ‘cool as a cucumber’. This organic essential has
been used in spas for years, cooling and calming our skin after intense
treatments and facials. According to dermatologist Amy Wechsler, cucumber
has skincare benefits including vitamin C and caffeic acid, which both fight
to reduce inflamed or irritated skin. You can use cucumber under the eyes to
reduce puffiness, or over your entire face as an anti-aging face mask.

EGG WHITES
Eggs are naturally rich in nutrients as a whole, but egg whites in particular
are especially beneficial in the beauty industry. The shrinking properties help
to tighten the skin pores and give you a youthful appearance. Used on skin,
it helps to reduce the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, and is amazing at
getting rid of black heads. Used on hair, it controls oiliness of the scalp, getting
rid of greasy hair and leaving you with well conditioned, glossy locks.

PAMPER YOURSELF AT HOME

TLC FOR YOUR HAIR

The protein and biotin from eggs combined with the potassium and natural oils
from bananas will restore nourishment and work wonders on limp hair.
- 2 egg whites, 1 ripe banana, 1cup milk & 1tsp olive oil.
Combine all the ingredients and mix into a smooth paste. Apply the mask to your
hair and leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing it out with your usual
shampoo.

REFRESH YOUR FACE

Get rid of that tired look by preparing a simple cucumber mask to leave your skin
feeling refreshed and hydrated.
- 2tsps apple cider vinegar, 1tsp chopped cucumber, 1tsp raw honey, 1tsp cinnamon,
1tsp bicarbonate of soda. Combine all the ingredients and blend into a smooth paste.
Apply to your skin, massaging in circular, upward motions. Rinse off after 2-3 minutes
with cool water and pat dry for a dewy glow.

DELECTABLE BODY SCRUB

Sugar is a wonderful exfoliator as it’s gentle enough not to cause irritation yet
coarse enough to get rid of dead skin cells.
- 125ml (½cup) brown sugar, 125ml (½cup) coconut oil.
Mix sugar and coconut oil to form a coarse paste. While in the shower, massage the
mixture all over your body then rinse off with warm water for silky-soft, radiant-
looking skin.

TIP
Parental supervision is
advised when using
scissors

METHOD:
1. Remove the plastic label from the bottle and give it a good wash. You don’t want it to be sticky for the birds you’re
trying to attract.

2. Measure out the dimensions for the door. It should be around a golf ball-sized hole large enough for birds to fit
through, but not large enough for predators. Once you have the measurement right, draw the hole on the side of the
bottle and carefully cut it out with scissors.

3. Next is the perch for the birds to stand on. You need a stick longer than the diameter of the bottle. (Good examples
are chopsticks, straws or even old pencils will do!) Make two holes on either side of the bottle. One just under the
door and one on the opposite side. Slide the stick straight through the one side and outside the other.

4. Now comes the fun part: Decorating! Get creative using paints and other recyclable materials from around the
house.

5. When you’re happy with the final look, tie a string around the lid and hang it in a tree high enough that your pets
can’t get to it. Don’t worry about putting anything inside the house, the birds will build their own nest themselves.

DIY VERTICAL TEXT SKYE LAVIS

GARDEN
A
perfect small space
solution! Vertical
gardening is a great
way to take advantage
of empty vertical spaces such as
walls or fences. It’s also a unique
way to add visual interest to your
space. In addition, those who live in
apartments with only a balcony for
outside space can enjoy the benefits
of vertical gardening. When thinking
about other ways to incorporate
vertical gardening into your space,
just let your imagination run
wild. An inexpensive shoe storage
organiser hung on a wall with the
pockets full of soil is a great way to
vertically grow herbs.

YOU WILL NEED:

- Hanging pocket shoe organizer
- Pole, screws, hooks (to secure
organiser to the wall)
- Compost | potting soil
- Plants | seeds
- Piece of 2”x 2” wood that’s as long
as the organizer is wide (used to
keep the pockets away from the
wall).

1. METHOD:
1. Attach the strong pole or curtain
rod to the side of the chosen
structure e.g wall/fence.

2. Use sturdy hooks or wire to attach

the hanging shoe organizer.

3. Check for drainage by pouring a

bit of water into each pocket.
If they drain freely, it’s time to
plant. If not, poke a few small
2. holes into each pocket. (If you
want to catch the water that drips
from the shoe organizers, place a
trough or window box beneath the
vertical garden).

4. Now it’s time to plant. Fill each

pocket with good moisture
retaining compost or potting soil
to a few centimeters below the rim
and add some water. Spring is the
3. ideal time to sow seeds for your
edible garden. Here is what you
should be planting:
- Basil
- Celery
- Coriander
- Rocket
- Parsley
- Cherry tomatoes

CARE:
4. - Keep the plants moist (Water
slowly and lightly so you don’t
wash the soil out of the pockets).
- Don’t over pick salad leaves (This
will allow the plant to regrow so
you have a continuous supply of
greens).
- Remove any diseased, infected or
damaged plants.
