Industry Chosen: Fashion Industry

Problem Identified: Child Labour

Child labour is a particular issue for fashion because much of the supply chain requires low-
skilled labour and some tasks are even better suited to children than adults, for example
cotton picking is best suited for smaller hands of children. Especially their tendency to get
exploited financially as well as in terms of work culture thus making child labour a major
concern in fashion industry. Employers get away with it because the fashion supply chain is
hugely complex and it is hard for companies to control every stage of production. That
makes it possible to employ children without big brands and consumers ever finding out. A
striking example is of the Nike Sweatshops ( https://qz.com/1042298/nike-is-facing-a-new-wave-
of-anti-sweatshop-protests/ )

Recommendation:
We believe that a new labelling system that would certify apparels as free of child labour.
This can be kept as a standard to be implemented which can be given to companies once
crystal-clear details about their supply chain and the related stakeholder interactions. This
entire monitoring process can be the responsibility of any third-party global organisation for
authenticity. Once a company is certified as mentioned above, they can be incentivized
accordingly in many aspects ranging from taxing policy to import/export regulations.
