Vocabulary competence

What is it? Is a fundamental competence in order to get reading comprehension, especially in


language learning, because if we wouldn’t know what words mean, how could we use a new
language? That’s the vocabulary competence, to understand a text, words and it meaning.

Characteristics:

 Vocabulary competence can be reforced by listening and reading.


 Vocabulary competence explore a word’s meaning, written form, parts, grammatical
behavior, collocations, register, associations, connotations, frequency, and it phonetic
transcription
 It’s heavily important in order to develop skills such as speaking and writing to produce
coherent and meaningful expressions.

Use/Examples:

 Students can be given a context or situation, so they will use specific words and probably
new vocabulary taught before, once they know the word, they use it, and it stays in their
heads.
 Some students can improve their vocabulary by listening to people talking, it can be
radios, native speaker’s speeches or conversations, videos, etc. then the student can
practice the learned vocabulary making a podcast, video or audio talking about a topic
which they know very well, using specialized vocabulary associated with that topic.
