1) What is the resource and where is it located?

Resources is Bauxite with the issues of being exploited (mining). It is located in


Nawailevu, Bua on the western coast of Vanualevu, Fiji.

The resources are impacted by international interest group such as Aurum Exploration
Limited and other local interest groups like Callison Pacific Pine Chemicals, Tropic Wood,
XINFA Aurum Exploration Fiji Ltd

3) What are the potential benefits of this impact as advocated by these interest groups?
returns of this investment so far include employment, compensation, social
assistance and community project assistance.

4) Have people in the region or in your community been consulted?


villagers of Nawailevu, Bua were very fortunate to attend a “Financial Literacy Workshop”
organized by the Ministry in partnership with the Reserve Bank of Fiji; engaging five
financial institutions such as Unit Trust of Fiji, Life Insurance Cooperation, Bank of The
South Pacific, Westpac Bank and the Fiji National Provident Fund.

5) What is the local significance of the resource?


 has created jobs for the mataqali members on whose land the bauxite sits. 
 has earned a total revenue of $50.6 million [US$24.3 million] since bauxite mining began in
Nawailevu, Bua six years ago.

6) How are people reacting to the current or future impact?


 concerns from the communities at the environmental implications as well as financial
compensation to the village of Nawailevu.
 complained of sedimentation on the coral reefs. Villagers have complained that reef fish
have started to disappear because the water is always murky causing them to go further
into the open ocean to dive for fish. 
  mining site is to undergo progressive rehabilitation with a reforestation program of 160,000
pine seedlings

describe how these uses would benefit the local community.
For the land they are proposing for the factory to be built in Fiji which is used to separate the ore
from the soil rather than taking the soil to China
