The set up for flow experiment through 2 types of soils (soil 1 and soil 2), having
permeabilities k1 and k2 respectively as shown in figure 1. The set-up is supplied with water
from a container at a pressure of 20kPa. Taking 2k1=k2 and selecting 0.5m as the datum.
I. Create a table indicating the elevation head, pressure head, total head and total head loss
at point A, B and C
II. Calculate the hydraulic gradient across each sample
III. Indicate the direction of flow
IV. Given that soil 1 has a permeability k1 of 10mm/s, calculate the approach velocity across
each sample.
V. If the porosity of soil 2 is 0.2, determine the seepage velocity across this sample
