A) Executive Summary

I desired the enormous wealth that my discovery promised, so I chose the valley pass route to
reach the claims office. I travelled for five days covering half of the journey, but I had strained
my body a lot and now I could not move an inch. Fortunately, my old friend Pat found me, and
took me to a healthcare cabin. There I received medication and decided to continue the journey
along with Pat.

B) Situation Analysis

People all across the world were going crazy on the prospect of getting rich easily as there was a
widespread rumor that Alaska contains lots of gold hidden inside the earth crust. So, I also
decided to try my fortune for three-month searching those gold mines in Alaska. The journey to
Alaska was not an easy feat, it spanned for two months, and it drained my vitality completely. I
got injuries throughout my body and my left hand was severely amputated, and indeed my body
could not take the hardship anymore. I was left with no other option than to take rest and to
provide ample time to my body for rejuvenating itself. I rested for two weeks; meanwhile, I also
collected a lot of information for tracing the gold mines. In spite of taking rest my left hand
never got completely healed, and it kept on getting into fits in which it became weak and
unresponsive. As soon as I was able to get back, I resumed my hunt and started acting on the
collected information. Fortunately, the next twenty four hours proved very critical to me as I
finally found one gold mine filled with large quantity of gold. The gold needs to be claimed
within two weeks; else the claims office would hold an auction where I could not get the
ownership. However, my affliction along with bad weather condition posed a serious challenge
to reach the claims office in time.

C) Problem Statement

The problem which I was facing in the aforementioned situation was to reach the claims office in
two weeks to claim the discovered gold mine. However, the journey to the claims office was not
an easy one; and given my ill-health coupled with bad weather condition, it seemed, prima facie,
that the deadline could not be met.
D) Objectives

My objective was to get rich by claiming the ownership of the newly discovered mine within two
weeks. Additionally, a very important but implied objective was to remain alive in order to
derive satisfaction from the prospective wealth.
E) Options & Evaluation
I had four options to fulfill my objective, and these were:

I. I could wait three to four weeks until the weather cleared, so that I could enjoy the
return journey. All though that would’ve meant losing on the discovered gold mine
and returning home empty-handed.
II. I could also go over the mountains. The path was dangerous and couldn’t be crossed
in turbulent weather condition. However, this path was shortest and would lead to the
claims office in 7 – 10 days. The biggest risk while trailing this path was that I would
have to come back from where I had started if I faced storm en route.
III. This alternative suggests going through valley passes. This was often used and was
less dangerous. However, this path would take two to three weeks for reaching the
destination as it was tedious and I had only two weeks of time.
IV. This alternative suggests gauging the weather condition for two to four days, and then
choosing option II if weather permits, else going with option III. However, if the
weather did not permit for option II then I would’ve already wasted two to four days
gauging the weather in futile.
F) Decision & Justification

I would’ve selected the third alternative as I knew my risk-taking capabilities very well. My
prime motive was to get rich and when I found the gold mine, my energy level escalated to very
high level and I was so much motivated that I wanted to get the ownership as soon as possible.
Such high level of motivation would push me to curtail the time duration from a range of two to
three weeks to two weeks.
G) Action Plan

As I would weight different options and would have chosen option III to act upon; I would soon
get ready to start the journey and I would also carry umbrella, knife, drinking water, lighter,
some food items, and a map of the path. Furthermore, I would try to cover the distance as fast as
I could so that I could minimize the time.
H) Contingency Plan
The contingency plan would only be required when my action plan had failed. If my action
plan failed because of my health condition then I would forget about the gold mines and
would try to recuperate myself as soon as possible. However, if my action plan failed
because of some other reason than my ill-health then I would take the mountain path.

I) Executive Summary

I was attracted on the prospect of making easy money by discovering gold mine in Alaska, so I
decided to hunt for them, and after two and a half months I finally discovered one of the gold
mines. However, this journey had taken an extreme toll on my health and I wanted to secure the
ownership of the gold mine by reaching the claims office within two weeks. I was left with four
alternative course of action, but none of them was a guaranteed success. So, I decided to take the
valley path which required two to three weeks of time but I wagered that I would be able to reach
the claims office in time.

Part 2
A. Situation Analysis

I had decided to go through the valley passes, but after five days of starting the journey I
became burned out. I had finished half of the journey but I pushed myself far too much and
that rendered me unable to proceed any further without taking rest. Somehow, my old friend
Pat found me and brought me to a cabin where my basic healthcare needs were fulfilled. I
still had nine days to reach the claims office but I couldn’t continue the journey alone without
having proper rest. Pat could get there and claim the discovered gold mine but Pat was dull
and might not file the claim correctly. Pat was also a dipsomaniac and could not be trusted
with such an important task.
B. Problem Statement
I was suffering from extreme fatigue and I had to cover the remaining half journey to
reach the claims office in the remaining nine days, but my ill-health posed an extreme
challenge in meeting the deadline.
C. Objectives
My objective was to reach the claims office in nine days and get the ownership of the
discovered gold mine. Also, I could not strain my body beyond a certain limit as that

would have endangered my life and I wanted to remain alive in order to enjoy the
proceeds of that gold mine.
D. Options & Evaluation
Pat had joined me and that opened few alternatives for me in order to achieve my
objectives. There were following three alternatives:
I. Try getting the ownership alone without asking Pat for any kind of help.
However, this option would take an enormous amount of time and I might not
reach there in time as after taking proper rest I would take ten to fourteen days to
reach the claims office.
II. I could go with Pat and that would still take ten to fourteen days to reach the
destination, but I could resume the journey without taking rest. So, this option was
less time consuming than the first. Also, my presence would hinder Pat from
indulging into alcohol. However, we would have to curtail the time period of ten
to fourteen days in order to meet the deadline. Additionally, I would have to share
the wealth equally with Pat.
III. I could also send Pat alone, but I would have to share the entire information about
the discovered gold mine and I could not trust Pat to such extent. Furthermore, in
my absence he could might get greedy and decide to out-maneuver me, and given
that he was a bit dull I could not be sure that he would file the claims correctly.
E. Decision and Justification
In the given circumstance and alternatives I decided to go along with Pat (id est option II)
as this minimized my risk in terms of filling the claims properly, keeping Pat’s
alcoholism in check, and being in charge of the entire situation so that I could trust
getting a share of the fortune.
F. Action Plan
I would continue the journey along with Pat after I have received the first-aid in the
cabin. I would keep an eye on Pat to closely observe what he would do. Also, I would
hurry Pat to curtail the travel duration by a day, so that we could reach the destination in
time.
G. Contingency Plan

In case of any failure while attempting to cover the distance together, I would give all the
information to Pat to go ahead without me. Further, I would motivate Pat to refrain from
alcohol and reach the claims office as soon as possible.
