Use of e-apostilles
Recently the Belgian Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs, informed us that they will
provide from now on only digital apostilles (e-apostilles). These apostilles need to be applied for by
a notary that first legalizes the documents concerned.
We were informed that the use of e-apostilles changes the rules for vali
as follows:
ity. These rules are
Digital apostilies are only valid if they are provided in an electronic way to the requester, @.9.
by e-mail, When printed out, the apostille will lose its validity. A digital apostille is valid and applicable
for every single page in the digital document.
Reason for this is that every digital apostill is signed in a secured way by use of a certificate
issued by the Federal Public Service of Foreign Affairs. This certificate is lost when the document is
printed.
The digital apostille can always be verified and reproduced on the website of the Federal
Public Service of Foreign Affairs:
https:/Megalweb.diplomatie.be/search
In the header of the screen there is a button where the language can be chosen. The apostille
can be reviewed or retrieved by completing the form with the number of the legalization and the date
of legalization. Both data are visible in the apostille that is in the pdf.
Our authorities also mention that every country that is member of the The Hague Apostille
Convention is obliged to accept digital apostilles
