Quiz No:2

A simple Manometer containing mercury is used to measure the pressure of water flowing in a pipeline.
The mercury level in the open tube is 60 mm higher than that on the left limb. If the height of water in
the left limb is 50 mm, determine the pressure in the pipe in terms of pressure head of water.

Also determine the pressure of water in the pipe in N/m 2.

Solution: Note: find figure in separate file

Let, h = pressure head of water in the pipe.

s1= specific gravity of water = 1

s2= specific gravity of mercury

h1 = height of water in the left limb = 50 mm

h2 = height of mercury in right limb above datum z-z

p = pressure of water in pipe in N/m 2

Now, Pressure head in left limb above datum z-z = (h + s1h1) mm in terms of water column. --------1

Pressure head in right limb above datum z-z = s2h2 mm in terms of water column ------------------------2

As pressures in left and right limbs above datum z-z axis are equal, so equating equations (1) and (2),

(h + s1h1) mm = s2h2 mm

h = (s2h2 – s1h1) mm in terms of water column.

Put values is above equation,

h = [(13.6 * 60) – (1 * 50)] mm of water column.

h = 766 mm of water column.

h = 0.766 m of water column. Ans

Now, p = (specific weight of water) * h

p = 9810 N/m3 * 0.766 m

p = 7514.46 N/m2 Ans
