WHAT IS A SCIENTOLOGIST
What is a Scientologist?
I would say he was somebody who
brought light and humanity to Man and
his sciences, because Man neglected to
bring humanity in when he brought in
Science. There is nothing at all wrong
with physics, chemistry, mathematics,
electronics or anything else, until some
little slaphappy guy who doesn't even
know he has a next door neighbor decides
that the machine is far more important
than men.
A Scientologist is a troubleshooter.
People get into trouble they can't get out
of. Life is going along, doing all right and
suddenly the gates sort of drop across the
time track and they just can't get out of
that much trouble. Nobody in the past
could get a person out of that much
trouble. Here's a fellow, he's going along
all right, the baby is born, then his wife
all of a sudden has dizzy notions that she
ought to kill the child. He's in too much
trouble. His life for the next thirty or
fifty years is going to be a burden to him.
A Scientologist can very well do some-
thing about that. But that isn't all. What
about the fellow who just thought it was
wonderful to go around and have big
adventures and all of a sudden found
himself falling into the traps of crimin-
ality? Nobody would let him have any

adventure and he found out he couldn't
have any adventure and he finally sunk
down to the level of being a criminal.
What right does this society have to
keep men in cages? I'll tell you what
right it has - none. A Scientologist can
do something about that, very definitely.
He's a troubleshooter for the indivi-
dual, for children, the family and the
political and economic group. He knows
what life is about. He knows whether it's
on the rails or off the rails. He knows
whether a corporation is failing or not
failing simply by estimating its level on a
tone scale. How simple. What is the state
of internal communications of the
corporation? Just look at that. "What's
the state of your inter office communi-
cations around here, boss? What inter
office communications, you say? Well,
I'll give this company about six months,
that's about it. Here will be a lot of guys
out of work suddenly." Here is manage-
ment not taking its responsibility like it
should. That's the economic group.
What about a political group? Well,
there isn't too much you can do about
political groups because they come and
they go. But one thing about the world
today which is intensely interesting is
that the two parasitic groups of the
world are at war one with the other.
One of them is Communism and the
other one is Capitalism. Communism is
a military aristocracy which depends
upon the worker, and Capitalism is a
money aristocracy which depends upon
the worker. Who cares about either one?
The Scientologist can remedy and
rectify conditions unfavorable to the
survival of desirable life forms. He has
to make up his mind what a desirable
life form is. He always has things he is
siding with. Right now you are siding
with Man, therefore flies aren't desirable.
If you have mosquitoes all over the
place, it would be a pretty good project
to go out some Sunday with some
kerosene cans and throw some kerosene
on those ponds. The mosquito population
would suddenly take a nosedive. That's
well within your purview because it's
part of the contest of Man and life against
the environment of the MEST universe.
Some forms of life have taken it into
their minds that they must be the only
thing that eats, and it's not going to let
anything else eat, anywhere. That's bad.
What's bad and what's good? Well, that
happens to be bad.
A Scientologist is a counsellor for
problems of culture. Culture consists of
the productivity, the art forms. Here is
where you would enter that immediately.
You might know of a Broadway stage
starlet who was doing fair, just fair. A
little too self-conscious. You've got to
have enough brass to go back of the
scenes and pull her up the tone scale and
make an actress out of her. You're
helping culture when you're doing that.
Another thing a Scientologist could be
is a counsellor for those responsible for
the conduct and planning of political
and economic groups. There are an awful
lot of fellows around who carry a terrific
weight on their backs. They just don't
think there is anything at all that could
possibly help them out. Your first inter-
view with them would be, "Well, no,
they don't want any of that - what is
it, soap?" If they really knew you
could help them out, you would be right
in there. These guys need help. Some-
body said one time, "the world is carried
on the backs of a few desperate men."
Very probably true. If you find any of
these desperate men, why, just give them
a little more back.
A Scientologist would be a teacher of
doctrines useful in the tasks of survival.
Things like concepts of the eight
dynamics, the basic drives of existence.
I had a fellow tell me one time,
"You know, you have no idea of the
impact of that first article. I was in bed.
I'd been sick for a long time. I read the
first article and I got out of bed. I said
to hell with being sick." He didn't get any
processing. He just suddenly integrated
life, and there he had something. He
understood it better. He got well. The
doctrines all by themselves have a
potency which you shouldn't neglect.
Somebody comes in, sits down, you
process them for a little while and they
go away. They think they know what
Scientology is. No, they don't know
what it is. It is a codification of an under-
standing of existence which is assimilable
by Man.
A Scientologist would be a social
catalyst dedicated tothe mission of raising
the standards of happiness of Man and
bringing him to recognize his brother-
hood with the universe.
A Scientologist would be a leader in
Man's conquest of his environment.
That's about the summation I would
care to make of it. That is a lot of things.
It is very very easy to be or do many of
those things. Let's look at the eight
dynamics and we find out that as soon
as one is much more willing to be the
first dynamic, he gets interested in kids,
he gets interested in groups, and so on.
And the truth of the matter is that this
universe is a tremendously interesting
place.

Brandie Brandt took her
college degree in govern-
ment because she wanted

being active in campaigns
and serving on a San
Francisco civic leaders
committee to revise the
city charter, she despaired
at the lack of ethics in

Turning to study archi-
tecture, she began work-
ing part-time for an archi-
tect firm.
Then she discovered

LEVEL II
This course, Level I I , has totally changed my viewpoint on my
own life. The Level II technology is the thing to know. And it's
about time I thanked my marvelous supervisor for her help and an
incredible C/S who is tops.

do to a person. It's amazing how Ron has put together the Grade
Chart to get beings to Clear easily. This level gives an understanding
on how the gradient scale works in auditing. The amount of data is

handle any case. All non-confront blew. Now a thick folder is just a
potential source of more useful data than is a thin folder. For me,

 I think of auditors in a rather intense way. As
I know more auditors than anybody else and
have a better basis for judgement, on this
/subject I can for once be an authority.

My opinion of auditors in general is fairly well known

to several people.
I think of an auditor as a person with enough guts to
do something about it. This quality is rare and this quality
is courageous in the extreme.
It is my opinion and knowledge that auditors are
among the upper tenth of the upper twentieth of intelli-
gent human beings. Their will to do, their motives, their
ability to grasp and to use is superior to that of any other
profession.
I think of an auditor as having initiative. He is able to
grasp or intend something and put it into action.
Auditors survive better than other people.
If this world has any faintest chance of surviving it
will be not because I write but because auditors can and
will think and do.

Glossary
ARC Break: A sudden drop or cutting of one's a f f i n i t y ,
reality or communication with someone or something.
Auditing: The application of Scientology processes and
procedures to someone by a trained auditor, pastoral
counseling.
Auditor: One who has been trained in the technology of
Scientology, a minister.
Bulletin: Hubbard Communications Office Bulletin
(HCOB), an issue giving technical information on
Scientology.
Co-audit: A team of any two people who are helping each
other reach a better life with Scientology processing.
Cog, or Cognition: Something a pc suddenly understands
or feels; a realization about life.
E-Meter: A religious artifact used as a spiritual guide in
the church confessional. It is an aid to the auditor in two-
way communication locating areas of spiritual travail and
indicating spiritual well-being in an area. The E-Meter is
not intended or effective for the diagnosis, treatment or
prevention of any disease.
F/N or Floating Needle: The idle, uninfluenced movement
of the needle on the dial of an E-Meter — one of the indi-
cations of spiritual well-being.
PC, Preclear: A person who, through Scientology proces-
sing, is finding out more about himself and life.
Technology: The methods of application of an art as
opposed to mere knowledge of it.
Theta: Thought, life force, elan vital, the spirit, the soul.
Thetan: The person himself — not his body or his name,
the physical universe, his mind or anything else; that which
is aware of being aware; the identity which is the individual.
VGIs: Very Good Indicators. VVGIs means very, very
good indicators. Indicators are those manifestations in a
preclear which indicate whether he or she is doing well
or poorly.
Well, I've just done something I would never have
thought possible just a year ago when I was first introduced
to Scientology through the book Dianetics: The Modern
Science of Mental Health. However, the facts speak for
themselves. In just a few short months I've become an
auditor who can actually help people get better. I've really
got to hand it to L. Ron Hubbard for the way he has made
it possible (and actually easy) through the gradient scale. I
got some great wins with the knowledge on this course and
from using it to help others gain new awareness of them-
selves. Everyone should get trained. It's invaluable.

of the trip to the hospital I had her recount the whole incident to
me several times, as in a Dianetic assist. Soon she was sitting up in
the back seat, and when we arrived at the hospital she was enthusi-
astic and laughing.
The X-rays showed a fairly severe sprain to the knee, from which
she recovered quickly. Since then, neither Shannon nor I have ever
had any doubts about the effectiveness of Dianetics in assisting re-
covery from accidents and illness. It's unfortunate that the nurse
at the scene hadn't been trained in these techniques — hopefully
some day soon she will be.
