First Grade Policies and Procedures 

Arrival and Dismissal: 

❖ School hours: ​Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri.: 8:00 – 2:15​; ​Wed: 8:00 – 1:30 
❖ When children arrive to school they need to ​wear a mask​ and ​sit quietly​ on a 
paw (6ft apart) 
❖ Adults accompanying children must ​social distance​ and ​wear a mask​. 
❖ Temperatures will be taken before entering the classroom. Students with a temperature of 100 or higher 
will be sent to the health room and parents will be contacted. 
❖ Upon entering the classroom students must: 
➢ ​Wash hands 
➢ ​Put on name tags 
➢ ​Take out and open home folders to be checked. 
➢ ​Complete any unfinished work from the previous day(s). 
➢ ​Read quietly. 
❖ Children arriving after 8:00 must go to the office to receive a tardy slip before reporting to the classroom. 
❖ ​Parent pick-up children must be picked up promptly at 2:15 (1:30 on Wednesdays). A 15 minute grace 
period will be allowed. After that, children will be walked up to the office for pick-up. 

Things to Bring Daily: 

❖ Clean mask​ that fits comfortably over your child’s nose and mouth. Disposable masks will be provided for 
children without a mask or for masks that are dirty. 
❖ ​Home Folder​ to be used for homework, completed work, and notices for parents. ​Please check folders 
daily and empty out as necessary. 
❖ Healthy snack​ ​please no nuts or products containing nuts. 
❖ Water bottle ​labeled with your child’s name. 

Homework: 

❖ Homework is an essential part of student learning. Assignments are given for the purpose of reinforcing 
skills and concepts learned in class. 
❖ H
​ omework will be given as a choice board to be completed and turned in by Friday (or the last day of the 
week) 
➢ Students need to complete the must do box and 3 other activities of their choice from the board. 
Parents will initial the completed assignments. 
➢ Students will need to be prepared to share one of their completed activities with the class. 
➢ Reading will be required daily 
■ Students should be practicing fluent reading and thinking about and discussing what they 
read with an adult. 
■ Some ideas for discussion: 
● Plot: What happened in the book? What problems is the character dealing with? 
● Character: How would you describe them? How did the characters change 
throughout the book? Did you learn anything from the character’s experiences? 
● Theme: What was the big idea or main idea/ 
● Key Details: What are some interesting facts you learned? What are the important 
facts or details that support the main idea? 
➢ iReady lessons will be required each week: 
■ students will need to pass 1 reading lesson and 1 math lesson per week 
■ parents will log the lesson titles and percentage received​ on the choice board. 

 
Communication:   

❖ Emails or Notes in Home folder:​ For questions or concerns, you can email your child’s teacher 
❖ Google Classroom ​to be used for class updates and assignments. 
❖ Weebly Webpage​ for class updates, important notes, and pictures. 

Behavior: 

❖ Students are expected to demonstrate the General Learner Outcomes (GLOs)

❖ Proper behavior (good listening and focus) is essential for learning to occur. 
❖ Grade 1 Learning Responsibility Plan 
➢ Students are always encouraged to follow the 3Bs: 
■ ​Be Responsible​ (Be on time to class, keep our room clean, focus and pay attention, finish 
our work on time) 
■ ​Be Respectful​ ​(​Be kind to everyone, keep hands and feet to ourselves, use positive words, 
raise our hands and wait to be called on) 
■ ​Be Safe​ (Wear our masks, social distance and stay in our own space, walk facing forward, 
use our supplies, games, and toys properly, , clean up our areas) 
➢ ​Consequences: 
■ ​1st​​ warning: verbal warning 
■ ​2nd​ ​ warning: 5 minutes (reflection time) 
■ ​3rd​ ​ warning: 10 minutes (reflection time) 
■ ​4th​ ​ warning: note home or call to parents 
■ ​Loss of privileges, tokens, or tiger paws 
■ ​Severe offenses will result in a referral to the office.

➢ Positive Reinforcements: 
■ ​Verbal praise 
■ ​Choice time or extra recess 
■ ​Tiger paws, token system

Birthdays & Holidays: 

❖ Birthdays & holidays are a special time for children and we would like to help celebrate this memorable 
occasion. 
❖ Please ​NO​ cakes, cupcakes or ​peanut products​. Healthy alternatives are encouraged. During this time, we 
are asking for items that are prepackaged and individually wrapped. 
❖ If you would like to celebrate, here are some ideas that have worked well in the past: 
➢ Stickers, pencils, or individually wrapped treats 
➢ Donations to the class such as games, books, or supplies. 
➢ Goodie bags will be passed out at the end of the day. 

Name Tags: 

❖ Name tags must be worn on a daily basis and returned to its proper place at the end of each day. 
❖ Students are responsible for taking care of their name tags. A fee of $5.00 will be charged to replace lost 
tags. 
Field Trips: 

❖ There will be no field trips during this time. 

Recess: 

❖ Our designated play area is on the grassy field in front of the first grade wing. 
❖     

Student Supplies:   

❖ All supplies, materials, and manipulatives will be stored individually. (Nothing will be shared). 
❖ Supplies will be stored in the student’s desk or in a bin.. 
❖ Please be sure all supplies are labeled with your child’s name. (Any supplies that are misplaced without a 
name will be discarded)
