Cooperation on the joint survey research activities in Europe within the 2017-2021
survey round of the European Values Study and the World Values Survey

The European Values Study and the World Values Survey agreed to collaborate in carrying out
the 2017-2021 values survey in Europe. A Memorandum of Understanding has been completed
between the two research programs.
In line with this agreement, both organizations coordinated the questionnaire’s design and the
overlap in the two questionnaires is constitutes around 150 items (single questions asked in
exactly the same way by EVS and the WVS). In most European countries, the EVS
questionnaire is applied, and data collection is coordinated by EVS according to the
strict methodological guidelines prepared by EVS Methodology Group that are specifically
adapted to the European context.
A Joint Liaison Committee has been established with the aim of ensuring regular
communication and coordination of common activities between the two organizations. The
collaboration takes place in different forms, and this table resumes them.
In some countries a unique team is involved for a long time both in EVS and in WVS (“EVS-
WVS Team”); in other countries the two organizations have different partners: in some cases
they cooperate for carrying a single survey with a split sample (Joint EVS-WVS Teams), in
others separate data collections are taking place (EVS Team; WVS Team).
