OPTIMIZATION OF EDM PROCESS PARAMETERS ON

ALUMINIUM ALLOY METAL MATRIX COMPOSITE MATERIAL

ABSTRACT
Metal Matrix Composites (MMC’s) are one of the recent advanced materials having the
properties of light weight, high specific strength and high wear resistance which are essential in
Aircraft fittings, gears and shafts, aerospace and defense applications. MMC is developed by
employing various techniques like casting, powder metallurgy etc. Aluminium Metal Matrix
Composites (AMMC’s) are the precise materials for marine, automobile, aerospace etc which are
difficult to cut by conventional method of machining. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is
widely used process among advance machining process for machining MMC’s. EDM is the
thermo electric process in which material is removed from work piece by erosion effect by series
of electric discharge (spark) between tool and work piece.

The objective of this project is to investigate the effect of process parameters such as
discharge current, pulse on time, pulse off time on material removal rate (MRR), tool wear
rate(TWR) and surface roughness (Ra) during EDM of aluminium silicon carbide MMC using
copper electrode. The above input parameters will be optimized for high metal removal rate, low
tool wear rate and low surface roughness using Minitab software. Taguchi based grey relational
analysis optimization technique was used to find the optimal process parameters setting for the
best quality machined characteristics.
