Preface
This preface, as well as all footnotes and annexes, is included for information purposes and is
not part of ANSI/ISA-75.10.01-2008.

This document has been prepared as part of the service of ISA toward a goal of uniformity in the

//^:^^#^~^^""@:*":^$:~$^"#:$@":@^@~^*~~~*^~:^:#^""^~$\\
field of instrumentation. To be of real value, this document should not be static but should be
subject to periodic review. Toward this end, the Society welcomes all comments and criticisms
and asks that they be addressed to the Secretary, Standards and Practices Board; ISA;
67 Alexander Drive; P. O. Box 12277; Research Triangle Park, NC 27709; Telephone
(919) 549-8411; Fax (919) 549-8288; E-mail: standards@isa.org.

The ISA Standards and Practices Department is aware of the growing need for attention to the
metric system of units in general, and the International System of Units (SI) in particular, in the
preparation of instrumentation standards. The Department is further aware of the benefits to USA
users of ISA standards of incorporating suitable references to the SI (and the metric system) in
their business and professional dealings with other countries. Toward this end, this Department
will endeavor to introduce SI-acceptable metric units in all new and revised standards,
recommended practices, and technical reports to the greatest extent possible. Standard for Use
of the International System of Units (SI): The Modern Metric System, published by the American
Society for Testing & Materials as IEEE/ASTM SI 10-97, and future revisions, will be the
reference guide for definitions, symbols, abbreviations, and conversion factors.

It is the policy of ISA to encourage and welcome the participation of all concerned individuals
and interests in the development of ISA standards, recommended practices, and technical
reports. Participation in the ISA standards-making process by an individual in no way constitutes
endorsement by the employer of that individual, of ISA, or of any of the standards, recommended
practices, and technical reports that ISA develops.

1 Scope

1.1 This document applies to valves, sizes 1 inch through 26 inches, of the clamp or pinch valve
design, incorporating clamp or pinch elements.
//^:^^#^~^^""@:*":^$:~$^"#:$@":@^@~^*~~~*^~:^:#^""^~$\\

2 Purpose

2.1 The purpose of this document is to establish requirements for clamp or pinch valves. The
following requirements are established:
a) Tests for pressure retaining parts and shutoff integrity prior to shipment
b) Marking requirements
c) Procedures for determining the flow coefficient and other related sizing factors

2.2 This document excludes solenoid actuated valves and direct fluid actuated valves.

5 Test procedures

5.1 Pressure test

When specified by the purchaser, a complete valve assembly shall be given a pressure test. The
valve shall be tested in the 90% to fully closed position at a gauge pressure not less than
1.5 times the manufacturer's 38 o C (100 o F ) rating, rounded off to the next higher 1 bar (14.7 psi)
increment. The test shall be made with water or another suitable liquid that has a viscosity (at
temperatures less than 52 o C or 125 o F) that is equal to or less than the viscosity of water. Air or
other non-hazardous gases may be used if proper safety measures are taken and provision is
made to detect leakage. Visually detectable leakage through the flexible element wall is not
acceptable. Test duration shall be at least 30 seconds. If the valve ordered is not to ANSI/ASME
B31.1 or B31.3, then the 1.5 multiplier may be reduced to 1.0.

ANSI/ISA-75.10.01-2008 - 10 -

This is not a shell test and no shell test is required, except valves that are ANSI rated by the
valve manufacturer shall be shell hydrostatic tested per the applicable ANSI standard.

5.2 Leak test

When specified by the purchaser, each valve shall be subjected to a leakage test in accordance
with ANSI/FCI 70-2 with the flexible member in its closed position. The test shall be made for the
leakage class specified.

5.3 Capacity test

The valve may be flow capacity tested, at the manufacturer’s option, in accordance with
ANSI/ISA-75.02.01 with the following exceptions and additions.

a) Due to the flexibility of the clamp or pinch element, tests to determine the valve-flow
coefficient, C v , must be conducted at five or more pressure levels covering the useful range
of inlet pressures to which the valve may be subjected in service.
--`,,```,,,,````-`-`,,`,,`,`,,`---

b) In order not to violate the minimum upstream test pressure limitations of Table 2 of
ANSI/ISA-75.02.01, pressure differentials of less than 0.34 bar (5 psi) are permissible. When
such are necessary, pressure differential increments shall be at least 0.07 bar (1 psi). Any
deviation from the standard procedures of ANSI/ISA-75.02.01 shall be noted. Plot the results
of these tests as C v versus pressure differential for the different inlet pressures.
c) The liquid pressure recovery factor, F L , shall be determined at as many pressure levels as
practical, at least one being required.
d) The temperature of the water used for test (see 3.1 of ANSI/ISA-75.02.01) shall be noted if
the valve element is temperature sensitive.
e) The accuracy of the test shall be within a tolerance of ± 6% for valve sizes 1" - 6", and 10%
for valve sizes 8" - 26".
Note that if C v / d 2 › 30, which is often the case for pinch valves as they approach their fully-
open position, the normal ± 5% accuracy specified by ANSI/ISA-75.02.01 may not be met. If
so, that shall be stated along with the actual expected accuracy, if known.

6 Ma rking

6.1 Assembly marking

The following information shall be cast into, or permanently affixed to the outside of, the valve
body or yoke.

a) Manufacturer's name or trademark

b) Model or type number - manufacturer's identification for valve series
c) Mating flange rating designation - Class 125, 150, 250, 300
d) Size designation - nominal valve size
e) Required or preferred flow direction (if applicable)
f) The information in 6.2 b) and 6.2 c) shall be shown on the nameplate
g) Minimum air pressure required shall be stated.

6.2 Plate marking

The following information shall be embossed, molded, stamped, or electro-chemically etched on

the flexible element, an information plate, or a resistant label that is fastened to the assembly.
If a flexible element is shipped separately, an appropriate plate or label shall be attached.

a) Material - a letter code will be used to designate the flexible element material that contacts
the process fluid. This code may be branded on the element where practical. See Table 1 for
code.
b) Temperature - the maximum rated temperature of the flexible element
c) Pressure - the maximum rated pressure of the flexible element corresponding to the
maximum rated temperature
d) Model or type number of the flexible element, if applicable
e) Element manufacturer's name or trademark

Developing and promulgating sound consensus standards, recommended practices, and
technical reports is one of ISA’s primary goals. To achieve this goal the Standards and Practices
Department relies on the technical expertise and efforts of volunteer committee members,
chairmen and reviewers.

ISA is an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited organization. ISA administers
United States Technical Advisory Groups (USTAGs) and provides secretariat support for
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) committees that develop process measurement and control standards. To
