REALISM AND STORY

Realism is a literary movement that occurred during 1865-1900. It focused on

ginving a view of what was occurring at that time, and on providing insight
into what was really going on in society.
Characteristics
1. Reaction gainst Romanticism
2. Realism is situated with truth and depicted life and society as they
were.
3. Focuses mainly on present issues and truths from now rather than the
past or fantasy.
4. Events that occur in the story are predictable because of the lack of
over dramatization and fantasy.
Opposing Romanticism
Realism rejects romantic themes of artificiality and ignorance, and instead
embraces raw life as something beautiful and art worthy.
Magical Realism
This specific realism consisted of fantasy scenarios taking place in average
settings.
It also a very popular genre used in Latin America, and also part of
contemporary writing.
The Realists depicted everyday subjects and situations in contemporary
settings, and attempted to depict individuals of all social classes in a similar
manner. Classical idealism, Romantic emotionalism, and drama were avoided
equally, and often sordid or untidy elements of subjects were showcased
somewhat, as opposed to being beautified or omitted. Social realism
emphasized the depiction of the working class and treated working class
people with the same seriousness as other classes in art. Realism also aimed
to avoid artificiality in the treatment of human relations and emotions;
treatments of subjects in a heroic or sentimental manner were rejected.
Important figures in the Realist art movement were Gustave Courbet, Honore
Daumier, and Jean-Francois Millet.
