VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE

Peter: Oh Natsuko

Natsuko: I have to be nice to people right.

Peter: Now that’s great. Starting from next week.

Natsuko: Okay please.

Peter: But no well I like you that way. I think everybody likes you this way.

Natsuko: Oh boy!

Peter: Okay lots of vocab in there. So let’s jump right in. Here we go.

Natsuko: 数学

Peter: This is

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 6

Natsuko: Mathematics.

Peter: Mathematics, math. Break it down.

Natsuko: (slow)すうがく

Peter: And one time fast.

Natsuko: 数学

Peter: Yes long vowel in there.

Natsuko: Uhoo..

Peter: ナツコ、あなたは数学が得意ですか?

Natsuko: 私は数学が苦手です。

Peter: 私も数学が苦手です。 Very scary. Natsuko, how do we say scary?

Natsuko: 怖い

Peter: Break it down.

Natsuko: (slow)こわい

Peter: And one time fast.

Natsuko: 怖い

Peter: Okay how can we say math is scary?

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 7

Natsuko: 数学が怖いです。

Peter: Woohoo! Scary.

Natsuko: You know some people love it.

Peter: Okay. Next we have

Natsuko: 授業

Peter: Break it down.

Natsuko: (slow)じゅぎょう

Peter: And one time fast.

Natsuko: 授業

Peter: What’s this Natsuko?

Natsuko: Class or lecture.

Peter: Yes yesterday we had a special construction for tests which was

Natsuko: の試験

Peter: Yes something, something の試験. Is this the same for 授業?

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: Give us an example?

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 8

Natsuko: 数学の授業

Peter: Yes okay. Subject, の and 授業

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: Okay very nice. Next we have

Natsuko: から

Peter: And this is

Natsuko: From.

Peter: Break it down.

Natsuko: (slow)から

Peter: And one time fast.

Natsuko: から

Peter: Yes and we can use this with time. For example, we had

Natsuko: 9時5分から

Peter: From 9:05

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: Time plus から. Nothing in between. Now, we can also use it with place, right?

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 9

Natsuko: Oh yes. 東京から

Peter: From.

Natsuko: Yes from Tokyo.

Peter: Now remember way back when we were introducing ourselves.

Natsuko: Oh yes.

Peter: For example, I would say アメリカから来ました。

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: I am from America.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: I came from America. This is the same one right?

Natsuko: Right.

Peter: Okay so place or time in front of から. Next we had

Natsuko: 曜日

Peter: And what’s this?

Natsuko: Day of the week.

Peter: Yes day of the week. Now which one do we have in this dialogue?

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 10

Natsuko: 火曜日

Peter: This is?

Natsuko: Tuesday?

Peter: Break it down.

Natsuko: (slow)かようび

Peter: And one time fast.

Natsuko: 火曜日

Peter: Okay so in Japanese, the day of the week, the 曜日 doesn’t change.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: But the character in front changes. Okay Natsuko, can you run down the days
of the week for us?

Natsuko: Okay.

Peter: And we are going to start with Monday.

Natsuko: Okay.

Peter: I know there is a big debate out there whether it starts Sunday, Monday but we
are going to go with Monday.

Natsuko: Okay.

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 11

Peter: Here we go.

Natsuko: 月曜日、火曜日、水曜日、木曜日、金曜日、土曜日、日曜日

Peter: Very nice. Now as we said, only the first character changes. Now we have an
interesting way to help you remember the order of the days.

Natsuko: That’s great.

Peter: Okay so Natsuko, can you give us Monday one more time.

Natsuko: 月曜日

Peter: What is the character that comes in front of the 曜日. What does it mean?

Natsuko: It means moon.

Peter: Yes okay. Now the English word for Monday actually comes from the word
Mani, the god of the moon.

Natsuko: Wow!

Peter: But I think an easier way is the first three letters of Monday are Mon, just add a
extra O and we have

Natsuko: Moon.

Peter: Yeah Moon day.

Natsuko: Oh yeah.

Peter: Okay so the first day is Moon day.

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 12

Natsuko: Moon day.

Peter: Now what is the character for Tuesday?

Natsuko: Fire.

Peter: Fire.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: Okay so we have Moon day and then we have fire. Okay what’s the next day?

Natsuko: 水曜日

Peter: And what is the character for this.

Natsuko: Water.

Peter: Okay so now what was the character for Tuesday?

Natsuko: Fire.

Peter: What beats fire?

Natsuko: Water.

Peter: Water.

Natsuko: Oh.

Peter: So fire day, next water day because water beats fire.

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 13

Natsuko: Okay.

Peter: What’s the character for Thursday?

Natsuko: Wood.

Peter: Wood. What stops water?

Natsuko: Wood.

Peter: Yeah. The busy bee, we are building the dam of wood. Okay now what’s the
character for Friday?

Natsuko: Metal.

Peter: Metal. What cuts through wood?

Natsuko: Metal.

Peter: Yeah axe and you know the character for Friday is gold right?

Natsuko: The character also means metal.

Peter: All right. Perfect.

Natsuko: Perfect.

Peter: Now what’s the character for Saturday?

Natsuko: Earth.

Peter: Where do we get metal from?

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 14

Natsuko: Earth.

Peter: And what’s the character for Sunday?

Natsuko: Sun.

Peter: Sun yeah.

Natsuko: As is.

Peter: As is. Wow amazing!

Natsuko: Wow, this makes the whole story.

Peter: Yeah now we will give it to you one more time just to make everything come
together. Okay Natsuko, can you give us just the characters for the week.

Natsuko: 月 Moon 火 fire, 水 water, 木 wood 金 metal 土 earth, 日 sun.

Peter: So sun is easy because it’s just same, Sunday.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: Day of the the Sun. Next we have Moon day.

Natsuko: Monday.

Peter: Because just add an extra moon and originally our word comes from that.

Natsuko: Uhoo…

Peter: Okay now to remember the rest, next is Tuesday, the fire day. To put out the

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 15

fire, we use water which is Wednesday. To stop the water, we use wood which is
Thursday.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: To cut the wood, we use metal which is Friday and we get the metal from the
earth which is Saturday.

Natsuko: The whole circle.

Peter: The whole circle.

Natsuko: Wow, this is great.

Peter: Yeah hopefully like this will help you remember because I remember when I was
remembering the days of the week, sometimes I get confused.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: But hopefully this will help you bring it altogether.

Natsuko: Wow that’s really valuable.

Peter: We hope so. Okay next we have

Natsuko: 経済

Peter: Which is

Natsuko: Economy or economics.

Peter: Break it down.

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 16

Natsuko: (slow)けいざい

Peter: And one time fast

Natsuko: 経済

Peter: Natsuko あなたは経済が得意ですか?

Natsuko: 私は経済も苦手です。

Peter: 私は経済が好きです。

Natsuko: ああ、それはいいですね。

Peter: Somehow I don’t believe you.

Natsuko: Why? Why?

Peter: Okay next we have

Natsuko: 歴史

Peter: What’s this?

Natsuko: History.

Peter: Break it down

Natsuko: (slow)れきし

Peter: And one time fast

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 17

Natsuko: 歴史

Peter: あなたは歴史が得意ですか?

Natsuko: 歴史は好きです。

Peter: 私も好きです。

Natsuko: ああ、そうですね。

Peter: 歴史は楽しいです。

Natsuko: 歴史は面白いです。

Peter: 楽しくて面白いですね。

Natsuko: そうですね。

Peter: Next

Natsuko: 化学

Peter: Which is

Natsuko: Chemistry.

Peter: Okay break it down.

Natsuko: (slow)かがく

Peter: And one time fast

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 18

Natsuko: 化学

Peter: Then we have

Natsuko: でも

Peter: And this is

Natsuko: But

Peter: Yes and this one we used in the beginning of a sentence.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: But something.

Natsuko: Uho.

Peter: In this example, we had

Natsuko: でも、金曜日にはまだ授業があります。

Peter: Yes now last week we introduced you to けど that comes at the end of the
sentence.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: You can’t use でも at the end of the sentence.

Natsuko: Right.

Peter: It stands on its own meaning but.

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 19

Natsuko: So it’s more like however.

Peter: Yeah exactly. Okay now today’s last point. What is today’s last point?

Natsuko: から

Peter: Now this isn’t the から from before. The one from before means from.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: This one means because.

Natsuko: Yes it’s different.

Peter: Very different. Now this one is used as a conjugation to combine two sentences.

Natsuko: I see.

Peter: Okay can you give us the example in the dialogue?

Natsuko: あなたがいませんから、金曜日が大好きです。

Peter: Because you are not here on Friday, I love Friday.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: Very mean example but the point of this is から comes at the end of the first
sentence and you can continue on meaning because. So this から means because.

Natsuko: Yes so the cause comes first.

Peter: Yes.

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 20

Natsuko: And connected with から

Peter: Yes. Okay so because of this reason, something, something, something.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: For example, if you remember a few weeks back, we had a great dialogue about
going out of the house.

Natsuko: Oh yes I remember.

Peter: Now for this one, at that time, we could have used this から because of
something, something, something, something. Natsuko, please give us an example of
how we could have used this.

Natsuko: 今日は天気がいいから家を出ます。

Peter: Because today the weather is nice, I will leave the house.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: Again から means because when it’s attached to the end of the sentence. Now
we can make two sentences together.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: And this is the same as けど、けど is but and this is because.

Natsuko: Uhoo oh

Peter: Yes very, very useful.

JAPANESEPOD101.COM BEGINNER #44 - TEACHER'S PET 21

Natsuko: Useful.

Peter: Okay uh I think we ran a bit long today.

Natsuko: Okay.

Peter: Now again be sure to check the PDF. We will have much more detailed
explanation in there.

Natsuko: Yes.

Peter: OK. Let's gonna do it!

Natsuko: じゃあ、また明日ね。

Peter: See you tomorrow.
