UNDERSTANDING THE ARCHITECTURAL TERMINOLOGY OF URBAN DESIGN
1. Node

A node is a centralized hub outside of the city, where there’s activity and
infrastructure to support it.
Eg: Koyambedu

2. Heritage
Full range of our inherited traditions, monuments objects and culture. Also range of
contemporary activities, meanings, and behaviors that we draw from them
Eg: Fort, central railway station.
3. Adaptive reuse
It refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than that it
was originally built or designed. Also knowns as recycling and conversion.
Eg: Chennai G.H.
4. Suburban spawl:
Rapid expansion of the geographic extent of cities and towns, often characterized by
low density residential housing, single use zoning, and increased reliance on the
private automobile for transportation. Also known as unrestricted growth in many
urban areas.
Eg: ECR
5. Identity
A building can symbolize a region (in the general sense), cultural identity an ethnic
group of identity, and even the identity of the architect. It refers to the interpretation of
a building, the expression it can create.
Eg: Rocker temple, Mahabalipuram.
6. Urban intervention
A movement where artists, architects and citizens wants to turn their city into a better
place to live.
Eg: Chandigarh, Charles Correa
7. Revitalization
The need to reserve architectural heritage of historical and cultural value is getting
more and more significant. A change in urban planning and landscape to describe
various forms of revival.
Eg: Mahabalipuram
8. Multiuse
Aims to combine three or more uses into one building structure such as residentials,
hotel, retail, parking, transportation, cultural and entertainment.
Eg; Phoenix, Urban Condominium
9. Urban Development
Urban planning is a design of towns and cities, streets and spaces. This design
involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes, and the
establishment of frameworks and processors which facilitate successful
development.
Eg: Auroville, Pondicherry
10. Large Scale
This includes of design of large complex and urban strategies and planning a city
development.
Eg: Chennai, Pondicherry
