Submitting

an Assignment to Canvas

In Composing for Public Audiences, you’ll be submitting two
assignments through the Canvas Assignment feature. This handout
guides you through that process.

For more information on submitting assignments in Canvas, please view
the Canvas Student Guide at https://guides.instructure.com/m/4212.
You may also access the Guide through our Canvas site by clicking on
the icon on the lower left hand side of the toolbar.

It looks like this:

To access the Assignment tab after you’ve logged in and navigated to
our course, select the “Assignments” button:

You’ll then be directed to the Assignment page on which you’ll find the
list of assignments:

To select an assignment, click on its title:

1
From there, you’ll be directed to the specific page for the assignment
you selected:

(NOTE: The sample above is an example and will not reflect exactly
what you’ll see in your Canvas Assignment window.)

When you arrive at this page, you’ll want to take note of a few important
elements:

1. The “Submit Assignment” button appears in the upper right hand
corner. You’ll click this button once you’re ready to submit the
completed assignment.
2. The window will also include additional information on the
assignment and submission details.
3. The window will also include links to the assignment prompt(s)
for the assignment you’re submitting.

When you are ready to move to the next step, click the “Submit
Assignment” button:

2
You’ll next see a page that looks like this:

It is on this page that you’ll begin the process of uploading your
completed assignment. You have several options for the type of upload.

FILE UPLOAD
1. You may use the “File Upload” (1) option, which is the preferred
file upload format for alphabetic texts and images.

2. Next, you will click on the “Choose File” button (2)—which will
open your computer desktop and allow you to select a file for
upload. This can be a .doc or similar file format.

3. If you want to include any (optional) comments for your peers
before submitting, you may add text to the “Comments” box (3).

4. If you have a second file to upload, click on “Add Another File” (4)
and then go through the process of uploading the additional file,
just as you did in Step 2, above.

5. When you’ve completed the file upload, click “Submit
Assignment” (5).

3
TEXT ENTRY

Although Canvas offers the option to use “Text Entry” to submit your
assignments, we recommend that you do not use this feature. It allows
you to copy and paste or compose in Canvas, but doing so may mean
that some elements of your document (e.g., certain formatting or
images) may not transfer well. If you compose in the Canvas textbox,
you may also lose what you’ve composed if you experience a power
surge or loss of power.

Instead, we highly recommend that you use the FILE UPLOAD feature
for submitting alphabetic text.

WEBSITE URL

In some cases, you may create your assignment in an online platform
(such as vimeo.com). In these instances, you will need to include a link
to your assignment using the WEBSITE URL upload option:

1. Insert the complete and accurate URL that links to your
assignment (1).
2. Include any (optional) comments you would like to add for your
peer reviewers (2).
3. Click “Submit Assignment” (3).

4
MEDIA UPLOAD

If you create a video or audio assignment, you will need to use the
MEDIA upload option, which includes a few more steps that the other
upload options. First, you’ll need to click on the “Record/Upload
Media” button:

Please note that we encourage you to UPLOAD a completed media
file rather than record. Also note that MEDIA UPLOAD will not allow
you to upload files larger than 500 MB; if you have a file larger than
500 MB to upload, you will need to use the FILE UPLOAD tab.

When you click on the “Record/Upload Media,” you’ll arrive at a page
on which you select whether you want to select an audio or video file
for upload:

Select the appropriate file type and then select it from the directory
on your computer.
