Vigorous monsoon conditions over Gujarat have brought unprecedented, record rainfall to Vadodara. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre, the city received as much as 424 mm rainfall pouring within a very short span of six hours from 2 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday. Vadodara has never witnessed such torrential downpour in recorded history. To put this into perspective, the average rainfall in Vadodara throughout July is 299 mm. Therefore, Wednesday's rainfall is double the average rainfall in the entire month of July. Moreover, the rainfall is forecast to continue on Thursday across southern Gujarat. Vadodara, formerly known as Baroda, is the third-largest city of Gujarat with an estimated population of over 20 lakh. Reports suggest that the downpour has disrupted normal life, flooding mast areas. The regional met centre also reported a 12-hour rainfall accumulation of 354 mm in Vadodara till 5.30 pm on Wednesday. The rainfall has been widespread across Gujarat and is triggered due to the embedded cyclonic Circulation within the active monsoon trough. As cyclonic circulation is currently situated over Rajasthan, the forecasts did suggest extremely heavy rainfall over south Gujarat. Vadodara tehsil received the highest rainfall in Gujarat during the last 24 hours with Dabhoi tehsil in the district following at 152 mm, Karjan with 137 mm and Waghodia with 124 mm. The neighbouring Chhota Upepur and Panchmahal districts received 100 mm rainfall Reports suggest that over 100 people were rescued from the swirling waters of the Vishwamitri river from Bhayli suburb in Vadodara. The officials said that hundreds of people in low-lying areas of the city and surrounding tehsils are being evacuated and moved to safety. The Vadodara District Collector issued instructions to keep all municipal, government and private schools closed following the heavy rains. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani convened an emergency meeting to take stock of the flood situation in Vadodara, Former Vadodara Municipal Commissioner and present Education Secretary Vinod Rao and Urban Development Secretary Lochan Shehra were rushed to the city. The National Disaster Response Force has deployed three rescue teams in the Vadodara region The usually dry Vishwamitri river, which flows through Vadodara, was rising dramatically from 23 feet towards its danger levels of 26 feet, authorities said, The nearby Ajwa dam's water level also increased to 209.45 feet against its warning level of 215 feet. The traffic jams across the city have been stretching on to kilometres. Electricity lines were damaged in some areas, leading to a blackout. The fire brigade rescue teams and administration have swung into action to resolve the issues. Vadodara was reeling under a substantial rainfall deficit of 43% this monsoon season from June 1 to July 31.
