Friends is an American sitcom TV show which first aired in September, 1994.

It revolves

around the lives of six friends; Monica, Joey, Ross, Chandler, Rachel, and Phoebe living in

Manhattan, New York city. The show demonstrates how those friends enjoy each other’s

company, support one another when any of them needs help, as well as comfort each other at the

time of hardship. In addition to this, the show includes and depicts the comic experiences, the

romantic moments, career problems, and also the relationship issues of the characters. Joey is

one of the three male lead characters of the show who can be described as the one with a

struggling career in acting, not as sharp and intelligent as the other two men, and infatuated with

having sexual relationships with numerous women. He flirts with whoever women he gets a

chance with and the usual pick-up line which he delivers while glaring at a woman from toe to

head is ‘how you doin?’ By this delivery of phrase, Joey has a special meaning attached to it

which is his way of asking women to sleep with him.

Joey doesn’t put a lot of efforts to dress up for his date or a night with women but dress

casually yet manage to look attractive, thanks to his good looks. He does not maintain long term

serious relationship and likes to keep the romance limited only to get women to bed. In Episode

24 of the first season, Joey is shown to be sharing his bed with a woman but due to his

contribution to a lab study he can’t get involved with the usual sexual conduct and manipulates

the situation to get the woman thinking about him as a different men from the rest and pleases

her through his words and physical actions. Joey is not shown mating with his partner during the

episode and so there were no such dialogues heard or actions happening during his sexual

activity. However, later in the same episode, when he gets paid for his part in the research,

restrictions on his sexual practices are lifted and he confesses that he will get back to being his
way. He claims he will prioritize his interest over his partner’s and continue with his typical sex

experience of getting the most sexual pleasure out of the deed.

Whereas, Love Life is also an American TV series aiming to narrate the story of a

different leading characters each season, belonging to the genre of romantic comedy, which

began to first air in May, 2020. The very first season is based on the character of Darby Carter

and depicts her part of the story for ten episodes. Darby is in her twenties and working as a

museum tour guide after her college graduation. Her parents separated when she was only four

years of age and lived her life shuffling among her parents and living in different homes before

she shifted to New York and settled independently. She shares her apartment with two of her

roommates, Sara and Mallory. The first episode of the first season named, Augie Jeong

illustrates the relationship story of Darby (who is dressed up in a sultry outfit especially to attend

Jim’s birthday party) and her partner Augie.

Darby invites Augie home and after hanging out, they spent the night together. The

episode shows their intimate scene ending with Darby taking a look at Augie’s bare body and

glancing over his butts. As the guy was about to leave, she gave her number. Such a quick start

of something more than a friendship depicts how desperate Darby was to seek a partner with

whom she can share love and long term relationship instead of just hooking up for sex. In

comparison to Friends, we can witness the development of technology in the form of wide usage

of cell phones connecting people and helping them maintain their relationships. Darby was seen

to be waiting eagerly to hear back from Augie by continuously checking her phone and being sad

every time she hears anyone’s phone ringing but hers don’t. As she waits impatiently, she can

also be seen to over-analyze the situation by claiming maybe there’s something wrong with her

body which is why he’s not contacting her or maybe it all just didn’t count much for him.
