Definitions: Part 1

1. Aphanitic: [ Grain Size ] – individual crystals cannot be discerned with or without a

microscope.

2. Phaneritic:[ Grain Size ] essential minerals are visible to the unaided eye

3. Porphyritic: [ Grain Size ] Large crystals (phenocrysts) in a fine-grained matrix

4. Holocrystalline: [Crystallinity] it means totally crystalline in terms of a degree of crystallinity.

The rate of cooling is slow.

5. Vesicular: [Texture] is a volcanic rock texture characterized by a rock being pitted with many
cavities (known as vesicles) at its surface and inside. Exsolution of gas.

6. Amygdaloidal: [Texture]secondary minerals filling in vesicles.
